Is Tylenol PM really bad for a person to take.? I try not to take it too much but it really relaxes me?

Update:

I also take it for pain. But my father told me to stop taking it all together because he heard it was extremely bad for the organs. Anxiety is not really a factor.

Taking Tylenol over a long period of time can damage the liver. However, taking Tylenol PM (which is acetaminophen and Benadryl) is not as bad as using sleeping pills. The Benadryl (diphenhydramine) is an antihistamine which does make you drowsy and the Tylenol relieves minor aches and pains. It's really an effective remedy for sleeplessness.

depends on how much and how often you are taking it.

tylenol (as most pain medicines) have to pass through your liver before being broken down and used by your body. if there is no pain source for the medication to be used at-the higher the concentration of the medicine your liver is having to absorb.

max dose of tylenol in a 24 hour period is 4000mg. each pill of tylenol pm has 500mg in it.

it also contains 25mg of benadryl (this is what makes you sleepy). max dose of this stuff is 80mg in 24 hours (so no more than 4 doses).

the more you use a medication, the more immune to it your body becomes, so although you won't become addicted to it, you could start to have a resistance to it and that's when most people accidently overdose. they take more than the recommended dosage b/c their body is used to the medication.

if you are having trouble managing stress or anxiety-talk to your dr about being put on something to help you manage this everyday.

using the tylenol pm won't be harmful right away, but could cause liver damage and immunity with long term use

You should be fine as long as you are taking it as directed. It is a sleeping pill mixed with a painkiller. It has a lot of Tylenol in it which can be bad for you if taken too much over a long period of time. If you just want the sleeping pill effect, the same thing is in Benedryl without the Tylenol.

Its bad for you to take if you are just doing it to relax... taking drugs to relax can quickly lead to addiction. Do something else to relax, like read a book or take a bath, and if that doesn't work maybe you need to be on anxiety medicine... but please don't be getting hooked on sleeping pills because believe me, it can happen right underneath you and you might not even realize its becoming a problem until it is full blown. Then not only will you not be able to relax, but you will have an addiction that is damaging your body and your life.
