Because a man named Hearst owned newspapers, timberlands, and stock in a company called DuPont that had recently developed the beginnings of nylon from petroleum and also a pretty toxic method for making paper out of woodpulp instead of hemp, on which the Declaration of Independence was written, and out of which the sails of the Mayflower asnd Betsy Ross' flag were made. The word "canvas" comes directly from the word "cannabis".

The name "marijuana" was used to give it a frightening alien aspect, and also to conceal from the AMA that they were talking about Cannabis, which was used in many medicines. When it got through to the docs what was going on, it was too late, the committee wasn't accepting further comment.

The funniest thing of all is that after hemp was made illegal, its cultivation was made MANDATORY for the war effort, because they needed all of the uniforms, web gear, packs, and rope they could get. Marijuane saved George Bush Sr's life when he parachuted from his burning plane. His harness was made of hemp.

Then when the war was over, they made it illegal again.

    The only correct answer:

A powerful man named Hearst (as in Hearst Castle, Patty Hearst, Hearst Publishing ..Cosmopolitan, Town & Country, Good Housekeeping, O The Oprah Magazine, Esquire, Popular Mechanics, newspapers, etc ) didn't like farmers spending their spare time smoking the crap. He used his newspapers to campaign to make the stuff illegal. That was near the same time alcohol was made illegal.

    Link I just found:

I am glad marijuana is illegal. It is a drug.

that may not often the only "organic" drug. do you go with a itemizing?--certainly, bypass to the Erowid internet site and you will hit upon a number of them. Rape, violence, homicide, genocide, etc. is often seen "organic", or a minimum of the manufactured from incredibly basic human urges/thoughts. might desire to that justify them? of direction, as many have suggested, marijuana is healing for some, and different unlawful or (extremely) unlawful drugs could be besides. Opium, of direction is a sturdy occasion of a drug it is the two an truly smart medicinal and customarily unlawful. it truly is beside the point what non secular communities think of approximately God being the source of opiates.

because back in the day 50's and 60's young people were using it and making assholes out of themselves. It was sold to children under 21 and then in the 60's weed got blamed for all of the problems, when it was other drugs making people dance naked in the streets. Then big brother decided to "protect the kids" and the drug was outlawed. 'Protect the kids" can get anything banned from grown ups.

    Mexicans.

It had something to do with Mexicans.

The Mexicans used to smoke it, so they banned it in hopes of getting rid of the mexican life style and their influence on America.

They banned it by only allowing it if you had a stamp.

Then, they didn't give the stamps out.

I seen it on the history channel. "Hooked. The history of Illegal drugs."

Because the hemp plant that it comes from would have been in direct competition with cotton! And, you know that for the South, Cotton Is King!

Hemp is more durable and has many more uses!
