Three travelers rent one room at a hotel...?

The manager says that one room costs $30. Each traveler pays $10. Later, the manager found that he made a mistake. The room only cost $25. The manager gives the bellhop $5 to give back to the travelers. The bellhop keeps $2 for himself and each traveler gets $1 back. That means they only paid $9 each with a total of $27 paid. The bellhop has $2. That equals $29. What happened to the other dollar?

    The answer comes from a logical fallacy. It's this statement right here: "This means that each man paid nine dollars for the room." Where did the nine come from? It came from 30-33=9. Why on earth would you subtract three, though? They were out FIVE. The math done properly should be 30-53=8.33. Replace the nine with that number and the problem works out just fine (minus the penny we just lost in rounding down). Observe: This means that each man paid 8.33 dollars for the room. 8.33 dollars times the three (three men) is twenty-five. Now add the two dollars the bellboy took, plus the three dollars that was returned to them and that is thirty. There is no reason to add the $2 back in because it was in the $9 each of them paid. You could just add back in the $3 they got back.

    or

    The price of the room was switched from $30 to $25 so you can't use the $30 any more in the math. Use the $25 figure instead. The bell boy kept $2 for himself. The men paid $27. $27 - $2 = $25 which is the new price of the room. The men overpaid by $2 due to the bellboy's shady handling of the refund.

    there is not other dollar, okay they had 5 left after the room cost $25, the bell hop took $2 and gave them $3 so they paid $25 got $5 back but the bell hop got 2 of those bucks so actually they paid $27 for the room with the bell hops $2.

    30-25=5 leftover, 5-3 (1 to each man)=2, 2=in the bellboys pocket

    p=30

    r=25

    b=2

    t=3

    p-r-b-t=0

    no... all the money is there

    Source(s): p=price (first price) r= rooms price (correct price) b=bellhop (wait... isn't that one of those things in 2-floor resturants to take food up & down?) t=travellers ($ back)
