Christians: If someone never hears about Jesus, will they be damned?
An Australian aborigine born in AD 1200 could not possibly encounter a Christian missionary, so they would not have the option of accepting Jesus. Since "No one comes to the Father except through [Jesus] (John 14:6 NIV)", this means all aborigines born before the British colonized Australia are doomed to spend all eternity in Hell, doesn't it? Same thing goes for everyone born in North and South America prior to 1492, as well as those born in sub-Saharan Africa before the European colonization in the 19th century.
Is being born on the wrong continent really such a horrible sin? If so, can you explain how this fits your definition of a Just and Merciful God? And if not, please show me the biblical passage which contradicts John 14:6 and says you can go to heaven without accepting Jesus Christ.
Looking for passage quotes here, people! You know, the kind with book, chapter, verse, and translation? You guys have no trouble providing them for every other question in R&S, even when someone asks for your personal opinion.
If you've come up with some interpretation based on logic or common sense in which people get judged differently if they missed the opportunity to get saved, good for you. But if it ain't in the Good Book, then you can't pretend it's God's Word. If you accept the literal rendering of the Bible, then God is arbitrary and mean. If you want a Just and Merciful God, you gotta make stuff up and pretend it was there all along.
Great religion, can't wait to join.

YES!
If the person who had no knowledge of Christ were "O.K." then WHY are Christians told to go and teach?

Oh, I'm so excited to answer this question! I would love to explain this to you. You see, God will never hold someone accountable for not knowing something! Otherwise He wouldn't be a loving father would He? So, the Bible talks about a day when "all those in the memorial tombs" will be resurrected. "The righteous and the unrighteous"! The righteous are those who died faithfully serving God, and the unrighteous are those who never had the chance to learn and accept the truth...this would include everyone you spoke about! And they're gonna have a chance to learn everything again! This is because our heavenly Father is so loving and caring that He wants everyone to have a second chance...
Accompanying scriptures....John 5:26-29, Isaiah 64:8, John 11:23, 24, Rev. 20:13.
There are so many more scriptures that refer to this, but I will definitely continue posting!
Source(s): 1 Corinth. 15:55, "Death where is your victory? Death where is your sting?" In our day, true Christians don't have to fear death because we have the beautiful prospect of the resurrection, as do those who were before Christ. Keep giving me a thumbs down...I love it! :) It will never change the truth. - 1 decade ago
I will accept your challenge. First of all, I don't know of anywhere in the Bible where it says anyone will be DAMNED. Encountering a christian missionary doesn't give you salvation. Before Australia, aborigines, British and anything else you can think of there was His Father God. Before Adam and Eve there was no sin so if anyone remained after the great flood that did not accept Christ when given the opportunity as still present today, you will not live in eternity with God the Father or Jesus Christ. You have a choice even if all those gone before did not; which they did. What will you choice be? Will you choose to die in sin and live in a buring hell for eternity or will you give your life to Christ and reign with Him forever?

For those who say that it can't be right that God would send someone to hell for not accepting Jesus I'm curious: If I needed a place to stay after I had brutally murdered your only son, (Jesus died because of our sins and we are all guilty of his death) would you let me stay with you in your home? I would say that God is pretty merciful to let anyone into heaven. If the choice was up to me, I'd send everyone to hell because I don't love people as much as He does. I wouldn't shed my blood to save them because they don't deserve it. I'm glad that God doesn't rule the way I would. I would like to be a missionary when I grow up and since I have accepted Christ, now I am willing to die for others if I ever had to but in my weaker moments, I still feel like going on a killing spree sometimes. I don't act on these impulses. That would be sinful. If it wasn't, I probably would act on them.
God is omniscient. That means He knows who will accept Jesus and who will not. I think that if He knows that the people on these other continents would not respond to the Gospel anyway, He might not bother to have anyone share it with them. God alone fully understands this issue, but it doesn't matter to you because you have access to the Gospel.
Romans 1:18-2:2 sheds some light on this issue if you would like to read for yourself. For a basic guide to what it is to be a Christian, Romans is a really good book. It is arguably the most important book in the New Testament. I say that because there may come a day when the whole Bible is not available to us because of persecution, so if you have to divide it, like they do in many other countries, this is a good book to pick.

This is a good question and points out what I believe to be true. Jesus Christ died for the sins of the whole world and this is why we should just share the gospel and refuse to get into debates about who is or isnt going to heaven.
That's Gods business only. How arrogant of a human to say this or that person is or isnt going to heaven. We should just share the gospel and shut up.

This is not actually an answer, it's a small extension to your question:
If accepting Jesus is the only way to the Father, what will happen to the nations who lived before Jesus was born? Why wasn't Jesus sent in the very beginning of the life?

The type of Christian you speak of Brother are those who build their houses on the sand. Luke 6: 46-49 “So why do you keep calling me ‘Lord, Lord!’ when you don’t do what I say? 47 I will show you what it’s like when someone comes to me, listens to my teaching, and then follows it. 48 It is like a person building a house who digs deep and lays the foundation on solid rock. When the floodwaters rise and break against that house, it stands firm because it is well built. 49 But anyone who hears and doesn’t obey is like a person who builds a house without a foundation. When the floods sweep down against that house, it will collapse into a heap of ruins.” James 1: 22-25 “Do not merely listen to the word, and so deceive yourselves. Do what it says. 23 Anyone who listens to the word but does not do what it says is like someone who looks at his face in a mirror 24 and, after looking at himself, goes away and immediately forgets what he looks like. 25 But whoever looks intently into the perfect law that gives freedom, and continues in it—not forgetting what they have heard, but doing it—they will be blessed in what they do” We can have an awareness of all biblical doctrines, we can know all the theological terms, we may be able to translate the Bible from the original Greek and so on, but when we get serious about living for Jesus we have to walk the walk, not just talk the talk. If we hear the word and then straightaway forget it (or worse still ignore it) then, instead of "Well done thou good and faithful servant" (Matthew 25: 21 and 23) we will hear the words "I never knew you" Matthew 21:28 “What do you think? There was a man who had two sons. He went to the first and said, ‘Son, go and work today in the vineyard.’ 29 “‘I will not,’ he answered, but later he changed his mind and went. 30 “Then the father went to the other son and said the same thing. He answered, ‘I will, sir,’ but he did not go. 31 “Which of the two did what his father wanted?” “The first,” they answered. Jesus said to them, “Truly I tell you, the tax collectors and the prostitutes are entering the kingdom of God ahead of you. 32 For John came to you to show you the way of righteousness, and you did not believe him, but the tax collectors and the prostitutes did. And even after you saw this, you did not repent and believe him." King Solomon, for all his wisdom, never found Salvation because of disobedience to God. God bless <)))><

No. That is the reason why there would be a resurrection of the righteous and the unrighteous (Acts 24:15) The righteous being those who have known God and Jesus but weren't unable to show their faith and the unrighteous are those who have not heard of them. They will be taught about God during the 1000-year reign of Christ.

ALL of mankind is lost...and has been since mankind rejected God... Only those who come to God in The Way God prescribes will enter Heaven... The Way has always been through Jesus... The overwhelming majority will not make it... those who were obedient and faithful to The Law(part of which required becoming a Jew), prior to Jesus actually being born of Mary and beginning His ministry, still were allowed entry into Heaven. they just had to wait in Paradise until Jesus came for them.... after the Ascension of Jesus The Church was instituted and since that day all who would enter heaven must do so through The Church.
That is God's Word... God makes the rules... if you do not like the rules... tough... mankind dose not have the option of making up it's own rules.... God dose not compel you to follow His rules... but you will not like the results of your choice not to

A.K., who ever said God was fair, or that He is required to love everyone? Israel was God's chosen people, and no one else was, not through their own fault, but by God's non-selection. And since all of mankind carries a federal representation of Adam, it is up to God to choose His own, not the other way around. The predestination verses should not even be there if we're going to try interpreting them any other way.

From creation up till the death of Jesus, we lived under the Mosaic Law. Where the sheep dies for the shepherd. In His Word it mentions that upon Jesus' death, all the graves were opened and the souls left them. Up until that point, (for lack of better words) all was forgiven. The graves were empty. (of souls) The Word now promioses that before the end of time every ear shall hear the Gospel.
