It is highly unlikely that many of the stories we hear about Mary or Mary Magdalene are true.

Jesus and Mary Magdalene were both descended from kings and it would appear that they may have been married. Some scholars argue that he may not have been married to her in the strictest sense of the word because of his dubious relationship to the Jewish establishment. In other words they may have had what we now call a de facto marriage.

From ancient scriptures she also appears to have been Jesus' favorite disciple and may have been chosen to carry on his teachings. It wasn't until 350 years after Jesus' death that Paul, who started formal Christianity, taught that Jesus was divine and had never been married.

Many truths also changed as a result of the First Council of Nicea.

It is all very interesting but unfortunately we can never know the truth for certain, since this all took place over 2000 years ago.

Mary is short for the Jewish name Marium.
