Flags don't fly forward they fly back, with the direction of the wind, so the backwards flag represents always moving forward and not back, no retreat.

Like the last person said....its because the flag represents always moving forward instead of backwards. The flag on the uniforms is actually the way that the flag is supposed to face....its just always been known to be the other way. Theres not much explanation other than we as a country move forward and our flag gets the wind pushing it towards that forward motion.

If you imagine the flag as a flag and not a patch, and the arm of the soldier as a flagpole, then it kind of makes sense. If the service member were advancing (as any American soldier should), the flag would fly as you see it.

The basic answer is: they are brave!

This flag is symbolic of the men who used to march into battle with an actual flag. So steady and strong that the flag would blow behind them. On the arms of our soldiers, the flag faces as if being carried into battle, blowing behind them.

Ok the moving forward sounds good and all but the fact of the matter is the flag is placed like that because if you wear a flag on your clothing the blue field will always be closest to your heart. Its meant as a show of respect.

The flag is faced, what seems to be backwards, because if it were to be flow what appeared to be correct to use, it would be flying backwards in comparison to the solidier wearing it. If the soldier were to be carrying the flag it would fly blue field in front, stripes flowing behind.

Easy enuff. The flag is this way because if you look at the way a Soldier runs towards a battle, the flag will fly that way.
