How do I clear more space on my C drive? I have defragmented it.?

My C drive only has 6% capacity left and I have tried just about everything to make more space without success including 'disk clean up' and uninstalling programs no longer used. I don't know where all the 'space' is being taken up by.

As I enjoy travelling, I primarily use the lap top for my pictures, but I transfer them off c drive onto D drive. Because C drive has such limited space, it interferes with downloading my pictures initially onto C drive prior to me transferring them to D drive.

Can anyone help.

Many thanks.

    First clean your cache, = http://www.stevengould.org/software/cleanup and/or

    Disk Cleaner = http://www.diskcleaner.nl/ ,or

Open up IE and go to Tools/Internet Options/General tab and Delete Temp files and History, then Boot into safe mode, = http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/tsgeninfo.nsf... , then enable CHKDSK, = Click your "My Computer" in the start menu, R-Click the C: Drive, go down and click on properties in the drop menu. When the properties folder opens, click on the Tools Tab, The first item in the list is to do CHKDSK. Put a check mark in all the boxes/start/yes/apply/ok . The PC should be rebooted in safe mode to do the scan. To view the results of a CHKDSK go to Administrative Tools > Event Viewer > Application, look for the most recent Winlogon event and double-click on it.

Then reboot into safe mode = http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/tsgeninfo.nsf... , or Start/run/msconfig/Boot.ini tab/check /safeboot - reboot. Afterwards uncheck it and reboot., then go to Start/all programs/accessories/system tools/disk cleanup , and run disk cleanup: Start/All Programs/Accessories/System Tools/Disc Cleanup and put a check in ALL the boxes(Note: Only check the "compress old files" box if you are running very short of disk space, as those files which haven't been accessed recently will be compressed to save disk space, but at the cost of slightly slower access times to those files. Nothing will be deleted or "cleaned up" as a result of checking "Compress Old Files."). Click OK then Yes in the next little window. Let it finish.

Then run Disk Defrag from safe mode. After booting into safe mode go to Start/all programs/accessories/system tools/Disk Defragmenter. When you open "Defrag", click on "analyze", and it will tell you if you need to defrag or not. (or see = http://www.dirms.com/ ).

Disk clean up and defrag only take off a little bit of space. Pictures don't really take up a ton of disk space. I agree with the other person who answered that there could be something bigger on your c drive like videos or music files. It could also be loaded with a lot of high gig programs. If you don't want to remove the things that take up a lot of memory I would just buy an external or internal hard drive. It's about a dollar gig now and even cheaper for ones on sale. Take a look at craigslist or newegg.com if you want to buy another one or upgrade.

Do you have additional drives? What I would do is get an external drive (you get a 2 TB one for less then $200) and store all your movies there. Or burn your movies on DVDs and clear space on the C drive. For now run disk cleanup utility and then disk difragment. It will free up some space but not too much.

this is a common problem for all p.c users, sooner or later you come to the situation were you run out of space

lucky enough there are very cheap external hard drives avalible for very reasonable prices, you can get a 500gb external drive for less than £100,and in my experience theres not many p.c users that could fill up 500gb of hard drive space,to make this sound even more big its actually half a million megabyte

i would then recommend you use your laptops internal drive as a system drive for just windows and then you can use the external for downloads, documents and other files

you can also get your laptop to boot from a external drive so if your internal drive failed and become unusable then you could use the external drive as a system drive

there are plenty of p.c cleaning programs avalible such as ccleaner(http://www.ccleaner.com/)but i would recommend "advanced windowscare personal"(http://www.iobit.com/AdvancedWindowsCarePersonal/i... will free up space by scanning your hard drive for temporary files, registry errors, windows configuration problems, start up items, and then sorting out any problems found, its a very good peice of software and highly recommended

    good luck mate

Run error checking, found in same area as defragmentation. If the total space on your hard drive is 8GB or less, then the operating system, if Windows XP or later, will take up half that space (4GB), or more. Also, since you probably have most of your documents backed up, delete everything in your "My Documents" folder, in my computer. When running disk cleanup, did you check all options? This includes temporary files, which are probably taking up most of the space you can clean up.

Apart from the obvious Add/Remove programs and 'Disk Cleanup' you can try and reduce your system restore space which can take a chunk out of your hard drive space. This should free-up a few gb of space.

Right click on my computer --> properties --> System Restore tab --> Reduce this to 5%

I think I would do a search, and see if there are many

large video files like .avi/.mpgs, laying around installed

from different programs, that you dont need.

You could always think about upgrading your hdrive,

    drives are so cheap now.

you need a bigger hard drive cause you use it all up with a lot of programs and downloads.external hard drive is better

You answered your own question. Pictures. Get a decent cdrom and burn them off your C: drive as you download them.
