What is the name of this novel about this man..........?

He goes back to the town he grew up and after a little while he moves into this house and everyday he see's this black dog that just keeps getting bigger and bigger untill it starts attacking people he knows.The only other bit i remember is in the house he finds some egyptian figures that someone had worshipped them.I know its not a lot,but some feedback would be great !!! Thanks a million
