Can anyone tell me about the Ft Polk, Louisiana area?
I am interested in learning what the Ft. Polk Louisiana area is like. Did you enjoy being stationed there?

It is what you make of it. I have been here for roughly 3 1/2 years. It is hot and humid, the bugs are huge, and the town (Leesville) is starting to attract more stores. The nearest mall is about 45 minutes away in Alexandria. The base is being updated too. There is a new restaurant and a few other amenities. Also, housing has become privatized. Most homes have been renovated and there is a new housing area with brand new housing. However, I wasn't lucky enough to receive new or renovated housing since I got here before housing was privatized.

Fort Polk is in Leesville, La. and is like any other military community. Pine woods and not much to do there. The nearest city is Alexandria, La which is about 45 minutes away. Great training site for JRTC. I was in the Devils Troop Brigade before deploying to Iraq. Can't say I enjoyed being there because I was on my way to war but otherwise it wasn't too bad.

I went there from Fort Sill three times for training excercises, so i wasn't stationed there but spent 6 weeks total there. Its very nice post, most services have been upgraded or modernized. Mmmm kinda humid during the summer, can take a shower and then walk outside and sweat like hell! Its centrally located not far from Shrevport Lafayette and Baton Rouge. I enjoyed my stays there.

I did basic at Polk and no one enjoys basic. But the area itself was OK and the people who live in that area are pro military and friendly.

We went down there to visit our son and it is different. It is hot,hot and hotter. you run your air conditioner all the time. and bugs ......bugs bugs and more bugs. spiders...jumping spiders.....the restaurants keep there lights down low...and they are on low for a reason....dirty dirty dirty....and full of bugs. they have beautiful magnolia trees. a lot of little girls still where dresses and children are to be seen and not heard. they do get spanked if they act up. that's not a bad thing...personally ..I think more kids need a spanking once in a while....the area us very stretched out as far as the lay out of the town.....they are very simple people down there and very polite. I don't think I will ever go down there again.....but it was an experience.

Can you say "SWAMP"? LOL, only been there very briefly but in the summer is is unbelievable with heat and humidity. It is pretty remote as to location, but the area is true 'old south' and the people are very friendly...

It depends on what you like. There isn't to much to do there but hunt and enjoy wild life. Be real care-full of lees-ville what some of us call disease-ville. I did love playing opfour in JRTC traines.
