1 killed this morning. 31 others killed at an engineering building just 2 hours later.. Worst campus shooting in the history of our country.

No one will ever really know "why", which is what all of us want to know. I agree that the fact that the gunmen always kills themself is horrific..he/she should have to face the families, but realistically, they will get whats coming to them...something way worse than we could prescribe here on Earth.

What I've understood (from watching all the shootings over the years ) is that people believe the shooters go on a killing rampage rather than just committing suicide, because they want to go out in a sort of "memorable way" as sick as it sounds.. I remember one father of a victim saying the gunment had his 15 minutes of fame, but will be hated for an eternity.

What I'm confused about is why there were people in the engineering building if the school was on lockdown after the first shooting? I suppose thoe students were already in that building or on their way to it when it happened, and have been in there ever since?

Also, they said that the shooter is dead? But that they can't distinguish right now between him and the others dead? How do they know that he's one of them? (Well..unless they saw him with the gun or police shot him...) And were there two shooters I assume? What about the first one, he was taken in by police, correct?

GOD BLESS VIRGINIA..My heart goes out to the students, faculty,l and families of those involved..

First let me say that their are 15,000 students at that particular university, 4,000 in the dorm, and 11,000 who reside off campus. Virginia Tech yesterday had a Press conference on Fox News, and one of the Authorities (there were 3), and I don't know his title said that they do have a security system, through email, and other technical means. However the time that the incidents occurred, was in the A.M. when the students were commuting. When they did arrive they felt that it was best to lock down when they did arrive. Truthfully at the time of the news conference they were still doing the investigation of the witnesses, and they did not have all the answers yet. That said, I believe they should have metal detectors as they do at the airports, and I.D. cards (ones that can not be counterfeited), as they are planning to do with Passports in the United States. Secondly when an incident does occur they should have a loud siren like they do in Israel, and other countries during war time alerting people to go into their shelters. That wll alert the ones who are commuting. For the ones that dorm they should have a PA system installed. These are the only measures that I can think of, aside from strickter gun control laws. Truth to tell, it is unfortunate but whatever measures are installed it seems that when a deranged person, or a terrotist is determined to harm people unfortunately they always find a way to work around any security system that is installed. It is like a no win situation, but we have to do what we have to do no matter what. G-d should help those families, to be able to overcome the tragedy of losing a chlld.

I go to Sweet Briar, about two hours of driving time away from the school. Many of the girls here know students at Tech.

It's very scary nowadays. As I was in my Modern Art class this morning, 32 people my age were senselessly murdered.

It's indelibly etched into my mind.

    Virginia Shootings and Gun Control

I think it was a tragedy first and foremost and my thoughts and prayers go out to the victims and their families.

They were just sitting ducks with no way to defend themselves much like the victims of Colin Ferguson.

When only criminals have guns the rest of us can only ponder tactics like "notifications."

In a state where concealed-carry is allowed or promoted, the loss of life could have been much less. He may have shot one or two, but a concealed-carrier would have dispatched him right quick.

Sadly there is no way to prevent a killer with a gun. In tribal Africa where there are no manufactured guns, tribesman make them from pipes and rubber-bands so clearly gun control is not the answer. You can make a gun out of wood in an hour! He could have stabbed just as many with a knife.

Since you will never stop the OFFENSE, we must allow ourselves a DEFENSE. We are not all of one culture anymore, so violence will only increase.

The only way to prevent these killing rampages is concealed-carry. Would you rather protect yourself or wait for the folly "notification?"

As of right now, 33 are confirmed dead.

This is a horrendous crime. You have to wonder what would make someone resort to such an act of violence.

It is coming to the point that we are going to not want to leave our homes for any reason.

I always like to believe that people, as a whole, are basically good. But today I am having my doubts.

Now I see that there are 31 confirmed dead at that University. I feel so sorry for the families of the deceased. I mean the one place you think your children, family or relatives are safe is on a college campus.

I believe the world is F%$KED UP!! I mean come on, so much innocent blood shed, and for what reason. At this time they don't even have a motive.

I live in Virginia and many young people from my church and children of my coworkers are students at Tech. It is so very, very sad.

I wish I knew why things like this happen. It's always so senseless. It'll probably turn out to be someone who was disgruntled about something....nothing more. It just makes no sense at all.

It's completely ridiculous. I live a few hours from Virginia Tech and know people who attend. I'm not sure what to think right now.

They are calling it the largest shooting in American history.

They gunman is dead, which sucks. They always kill themselves. I wish he was alive so he had to face the families of all the innocent kids he murdered.

They say it was the worst school shooting in the history of the US. 31 is confirmed dead now! Columbine had 12 students and 1 teacher dead and then the gunmen shot themselves. They were not even considered outcast...

Tragic and a wake up call about what this world is coming to. I have a 16 year old daughter who just yesterday told me she wants to start looking into colleges and now I am scared out of my mind that she not be safe if she went away. Its crazy. I hope the families of those who have passed away today have support and strength to get them through this. Horrible and shocking and tragic.
