funny how people give wrong answers...

there are 9 total. 1 for each day, and a shamash.

to add additional complication, theres something ELSE called a Hannukiah, which is different from a menorah in that it has only 7. 6 regular and one shamash.

The typical Menorah used in Hanukkah celebrations has nine candlesticks.

Eight for the eight days of Hanukkah and one called the Shamesh to light them.

The Biblical Menorah in the Temple on the other hand had seven.

On a regular menorah there are 7...6 of them are of the same height -- showing equality while the middle candle, even though it is is placed higher than the others is considered the servant candle. It is always lighted first and then it is used to light the other 6.

For Hanukkah, there are 9 candles...one servant candle and 4 on either side.

8 with one other one separated (usually higher and in the middle or far off to the side) called a shamas which is used to light the other candle(s)

But that is the menorah (really called a chanukiah) that is lit by Jews over Chanukah.

There used to be a Menorah in the temple and it had seven candles.
