In my experience this is true. Add sand - the type you can buy for kids' sandpits. It is sterile, clean and will not contain unwanted guests. However, you should also add some nutrient like manure, compost or the likes and mix it in with the existing soil.

soft workable soil is best for most plants. sandy soil has a tendency to not be as full of nutrients as some others. You can make your soil sandier by just adding a bag of sand to the soil where you want to plant something that needs that kind of soil (like carrots). I had no trouble growing spinach and other greens in regular soil. For a great salad, I grew red oak leaf lettuce and spinach. Lettuce doesn't have many nutrients, so I like to add spinach to make it worth while. Some people grow a salad-mix, which has different leaf lettuce, mustard green and a few others. It gives a lot more flavor and nutrients to a salad. Hope this helps.

It's a good idea to add sand to any soil for drainage.
