Buying clothes if you're in between plus-sized and "normal."?

I keep hearing that size 12-14 is the average size for a female, but most of the shops only carry clothes up to 10, with just a few size 12 options. The plus size shops always claim to start at size 14, but I rarely find anything under size 18 there. Where do I shop if I'm in between?

To make matter worse, I can't buy sets because I need to go to a plus-sized shop to buy size 14-16 trousers and skirts, but to a "normal" shop to buy size 12 tops and jackets. They've got great suit sets for office wear at The Limited and at Lane Bryant, but I can't get a matching set because I have to shop at two places to get top and bottom.

Is there any shop in the Northern Virginia area that has a range of sizes?

Hi i don't live in Northern Virginia but i know what you mean. I have the same problem too. I have a very small top and my bottom half is a bit bigger. So evertime I buy a suit I have to either buy a smaller size for the top or buy the entire suit large and have it adjusted at a tailor/seamstress. Just this weekend I went to a store to buy an outfit and once I tried it on the girl who was helping me out went and got the top to match the outfit. Of course I tried it and it just hung there. I ended up having to buy the top part of the outfit in a small and the bottom half in large. It has always been tough for me shopping and so far I haven't found anywhere that has a range of sizes except department stores like Macy's and Nordstrom's but sometimes I can't find the types of clothes I am looking for. So you may just have to get them altered or buy your tops and bottoms as separates.

I have the same problem. I shop mostly at Target or discout stores like Ross or T J Max. I have lerned to try everything on since every thing is cut differenly. I have a size 16 pants I can't get into but am mostly buying size 14's. I have to try on tops carefully, I can go from a large to an xxl.

    Try Wal-Mart & Kohls.

They both have lines that come in straight sizes AND plus sizes. That way you can mix and match the peices.

Also, check out junior plus sections of the stores, they tend to run a size smaller. :-)

Macy's at Tyson's Corner and especially at The Galleria has a women's dept that is quite large. You can also use their personal shopper for no extra charge to help you put outfits together.
