Weight gain supplements?

I am 20.5 weeks pregnant - and have only gained a total of about 2 or 3 lbs. My pre-pregnancy wieght was 128lbs and I am 5'4" (pretty average)

My midwife was giving me a hard time at my last check up - telling me that I NEED to gain wieght. (I don't think so, nor do I care for the midwives - but thats a whole 'nother story lol)

Is drinking something like a Slimfast or Ensure safe during pregnancy - If I am drinking them in addition to my regular meals?

Any other ideas?

I have had problems gaining weight too. My doctor had me start writing down everything I ate. This was helpful because you can make sure that you're getting all your fruits, veggies, protein, fats, grains, and calcium. You can also count up all your calories. My doc wanted to make sure that I was getting between 2000-2300 calories. This sounds like a pain in the ***, but it really wasn't, especially for the peace of mind it provided. As long as you are getting a balanced diet with plenty of calories, the baby will get what it needs.

I would talk to your midwife further before hitting the simple sugars really hard.

Your midwife has her opinion, but it isn't the same as everyone else's. My OBGYN said the whole pound i gained(i am 5'11" and prepreg weight 155) was healthy for the baby. That was at week 24 now at week 26 things are a growing and a gaining and my appetite is back to normal.

I am of the opinion that those "shakes" aren't healthy when you aren't pregnant so don't take the chance.

My suggestion, is dump your midwife and remember that no 2 people are alike and neither are 2 pregnancies.

NO diet suppliments of any kind. There are odd ingredients that can cause contractions in some women.

Ensure should be fine but watch the sugar intake.

Your total weight gain should be not more then about 35 lbs. You will gain more weight, and more quickly further into your pregnancy. Don't rush it, as long as you are both healthy, there is no reason to gain tons of weight.

Weight gain is not as important as the quality of nutrition. I'm glad you are trying by using a nutrient packed drink instead of junk food, but it is still best to use whole foods (not that you could eat more if you wanted to).

I used protein bars and shakes as snacks - I worked hard for every pound I gained with my son after having a hard time eating with my daughter.

Here is more info if you want more encouragement. http://nutrition.birthingnaturally.net/weight.html

    Good Luck!

Those kinds of drinks contains some things that may not be healthy for you during pregnancy. I have always heard that drinking milkshakes before bed would help you to gain weight, though.

ummm..slimfast will make you loose weight not gain it!!! and is not healthy for you!!

talk to your actual doctor about the weight issues, but dont take anything until you have consulted them.
