I had a part time job for a while but found that it didnt justify the child care costs. I am now home full time again. When I need a little extra cash I baby sit for the neighbors, or I make and sell cross stitched blankets, pillows ect. The cross stitching is actually turning out to be a great way to make money and stay at home. And friend of mine crochets afghans and blankets. We are actually thinking of setting up a little craft shop in our town together.

Do you know how to to any crafts? You could easily turn that into a small home business.

I was in the same boat not too long ago. With my first child, I stayed home her first year and then had to go back to work due to a divorce. I remarried and had another baby and did not want to go back to work. I prefered to stay home and raise my children not have them raised in a daycare center and sick all of the time.

So, I decided to help local mom's by opening up my home as a daycare. I offer cheaper rates than daycare centers do, the group is alot smaller and they get sick alot less. I watch 3 children plus my two. I pull in an extra $1000 a month just by staying home and playing with the kids all day. It was rough the first few weeks but, no that we have a good schedule running its alot of fun and the days go by fast.

    Good Luck!!

Hi. I'm a mother of two with one on the way and I completely understand how you feel. I struggled to put myself through school and earn a degree to work in the corporate world for years before I realized that I wanted and needed more out of life. I'm now an independent consultant with Arbonne, I am able to spend quality time with my family, do the things that we've always wanted, and still contribute to my family income. I earn a great residual income by simply sharing premium products that I use and love as well and offering an opportunity for others to do the same. I have my own home business. I sell dental and health benefits online and on the phone. All my customers are those who request the info from me, I never cold-call or anything like that. Its pretty easy to learn, and the benefits are great. Its also nice to be doing something that helps people. If you live in the US, email or instant message me. I am always looking to expand my team, and offer full training. Another option is by doing daycare out of your home. You could take in older children because they are more independent. The money isnt great, but its better than going off to work and paying someone else to raise your kid, and never getting to see your own child. I am eternally grateful that I didnt re-join the rat-race after having my daughter, and am more than happy to help other moms be able to stay home too.

There are many things you can do for work, but perhaps a few simple lifestyle changes could keep you from having to have a second income. Do you have two car payments? Sell one car and buy a cheaper one for hubby to drive back and forth to work or drive him yourself. This would save $ on upkeep and insurance.

With having a job, you will be more likely to eat prepacked foods. Stay-at-home-moms often have more time to prepare their own meals from scratch, saving calories, health and money. (Once-a-Month cooking is a huge money and time saver!)

Also, if you have extra time, you will be able to hit more garage sales and resale stores, saving money on toys, housewares and clothing. And you may be able to find some things to resell on Ebay!

(I am a SAHM w/ 4 kids. My children have great toys and wear stylish clothes, but I have yet had to go shopping at a department store for them. When I see something cheap at a store or yard sale I pick it up and store it away for the next season or when it will fit them!)

I negotiated with my work a partial SAH schedule. I work nights (telecommute) during the week, and then go into the office on Saturdays while my husband watches the kids (this also has the benefit of hubby getting some alone time with our boys).

Had that not worked out, I was willing to go back to retail despite the significant pay cut. However, by negotiating with my current employer - who I was happy with anyway - I was able to mostly keep the same hourly rate even when going from FT to PT. Best of luck.

I agree, home daycare is probably the most convenient thing to do. It's certainly not the easiest though.

I am toying with the idea of staying home when my 2nd one is born, if I can't get the flexible schedule that I am looking for at my present job. If I do stay home, I will probably find a retail job that I can do some evenings and weekends. It's not ideal, but it would help.

Well, my husband brings in all the income in my house. I stay home with the kids, cook, clean, etc. I help the family by taking care of it and keeping track of the money. I am the one who clips coupons and shops at the sales, etc. So, it's a partnership. It's pretty difficult to be a stay at home mom if you don't have a husband to support the family.
