Could someone please give me some advice to keep me cool?
I recently had to sell my home and move back in with my mother for mainly health reasons. Because of the way her house is set up, I moved "upstairs"......it is a fairly big area, and it turned out rather nicely.
The problem I am having is keeping it COOL. Since the weather has been warming up.....it was 85 here today......the upstairs gets terribly HOT.....so hot that I can not stand it! Due to being on disability, I will NOT be able to get a window a/c unit until maybe June...def. July.....in the mean time....I need to know how to cool down the room. I have 2 box fans that I use. I put them in the windows(one faces north, the other south). Which fan should I have blowing in, and which fan should I have blowing out? I have heard that this will help circulate the air and cool things down.....but it did NOTHING today.....so any ideas will be greatly appreciated.......the one that works will get the "best answer"....I know you are happy about that ;-)
Thanks in advance
mmelasso: If you would please, what is cl......I am new to this.....I think it would be wonderful to be able to recieve a window a/c from someone who cares, and I know that GOD can & will provide, but I don't like asking for "charity" because I feel so undeserving

It depends: if the rest of the house is cooler, you should set them both blowing to the outside, but you should have a good opening between the rest of the house and your place. If there is no opening the air will just stay still.
Or put your fans on the opening sucking the fresh air of downstairs, he,he.
After 9:00 or !0:00 A.M., chances are the outside air will be hotter than inside. You could shut the windows and set the fans to circulate the air inside. After the sun sets the outside temperature will fall again. Put the blowing to the outside fan in the side to the street (chances are the air there would be a bit hotter) and the blowing to the inside in the side of the garden or backyard. Just check there are no an A/C unit of the neighbors there or something like that. If there is not to humid, you can hang wet sheets in the flow of the inside fan.
CAUTION: NOT TOO CLOSE, you can suffer an electric shock if they make contact.
And maybe you want to try what my grandparents did around 1930: they wrapped themselves in wet sheets to sleep.
Good luck and keep your cool :)

Don't know where you live so the answer will be generic. The fan in the North window should bring air into the area(and slightly towards the ceiling as heat rises) and the South fan should blow hot air out. I recommend keeping hand towels in the freezer (10 is the recommended #) and apply them on your wrists, ankles and the back of your neck as often as possible. (These are the body's' "thermostats". You are actually faking your body into believing that the room is cooler than it actually is. Please also check your local social services organizations (churches, etc.) to see if the will supply a window AC system to a disabled person. Most have financing for such things. Good luck.

I think the fans in the windows are just a myth. It never helped my house. What I use to do is cover the windows with DARK sheets to help keep the sun out. Blinds don't work. If you still want to try the fans, then place one blowing out on one end of the house and one blowing in on the other side of the house. You can't really say which window to do which direction cause the wind changes directions throughout the day. Just try to determine which way the wind is blowing and let the wind blow INTO the house and the other fan away from the house. Hope it works. GOODLUCK

The dry ice may work but be very careful when handling it because you can receive sever skin burns from it if it contacts with your skin.
If you live in a humid climate a bucket of ice set under the fan might work with the air blowing over the ice. Sleep in a wet sheet and wet your cloths in dry climates that works well. I survived part of a AZ summer that way with no a/c. Evaporator cooling. I wish I knew what state you lived in I have a window unit sitting in my garage.
I will keep you in my prayers that you get some help some how. I am in Tx.

Sure...simply the reason is dry hot air is difficult to condition
the updraft of hot air recirculating hot air goes upward thus making it more terribly hotter...you need a cool mist humidifier
get some dry ice break it into minor small pieces or drop it on the floor to fit the size of the humidifier opening when you fill the water in the cool mist humidifier drop the dry ice in the humidifer and the dry hot air will condition and slightly moisten the dry air going upward thus the air will quickly condition to a cooler climate

Cho is just a copy cat, so don't mind him! Contact a place like the Salvation Army, explain you situation, and let them help you. You could be dead by July from heat exhaustion. The best you can hope for with the fans is the temp in the room be the same as out side. 85 is too hot to be healthy.

Just put on a bikini and take some good pictures. Both blowing out to suck cooler air from the rest of the house upstairs.

Put an ad on cl and ask if somebody has a a/c they don't use any more and explain why you need one. There are a lot of wonderful people in this world that are willing to help you out. I will pray that the Lord sends you this blessing.
