Are Americans going to learn to love anything but money or trust anything beyond guns, prisons or war?
The Iraq War like the Vietnam War has been an opportunity to learn by experience, but the American people obviously did not learn the many lessions during or after Vietnam. Are we going to learn anything about war this time? Or are we going to attack some other Country in the next decade and blow another trillon dollars, thousands of our youth and sap our confidence to the bone again.
The question then becomes, how many times can we lose a trillion dollars and still be a whealthy Country? However maybe it is just better to loss some or all of our wealth if we can not learn how to us it for peace and progress.

It does seem we learned nothing from Vietnam. Actually, I think those in power now did. Simply call anyone against the war "traitors" or terrorists. The recent Kent State Massacre anniversary passed without a whisper. I read someone who protested in those days said that "it was the first time we realized they would kill us". To the person who said Vietnam & Iraq aren't alike, they're alike because media & government vehemizes anyone against the war-even more successfully this time. LBJ speeches are so much like Bush's, it's unbelievable.
Our wealth-all they have to do is tell people how "great" the economy is, even though there are many signs indicating otherwise-our "savings rate" is not only a negative 1.5%, it's the worst since the great depression. But people continue to shop. Perhaps we're just stupider since we are more likely to fall for media hype and propaganda than ever.
And Tenet is the latest powerful person to say it's "not my fault". Many at the Nueremberg Trials proclaimed the same thing-they were simply following orders.
And yes, if our economy depends on oil, as some say, are we wealthy at all? It seems we should turn to another way to amass wealth.

Which Americans are you referring to?
I'm American and I do truly love each and every human being on earth and I trust God with everything in me!
Unfortunately, I don't like everybody.
I don't like nor do I support Pres. Bush...in nothing!
In my honest opinion, Pres. Bush has the posture and swagger of a psychotic Texas cowboy.
This is what makes him deadly and also, quite possibly, the most dangerous man on earth.
That aside...we still haven't learned how to leave other people alone.
Some people are shocked that other countries have deemed us the "Big Bullies of the Universe"; but...if the shoe fits...we ought to wear it!

Keep smiling. Asking a question can be a violation, called chatting. There are some truly lovely people here.

I don't know why people want to take such a negative view of America. We help more of the poorest people in the world than any other country. We are all about liberty and freedom. People from all over the world wish they could be you and yet this is how you view your country.
You should be ashamed.

The only similarity between Vietnam and Iraq is that the troops overseas, that believe in their mission and their cause, get stabbed in the back by the liberals and socialists back at home.

Being from the USA, Texan, it is very doubtful. America is being led by hypocrisy, and leaders who are more concerned about their pocketbooks.

geee... that sure sounds to me like an essay with a question mark at the end, than a real question. Let me guess... the Best Answer will be the first to say "damn right! you're a genius"?

how in the h--e--double hockey sticks do you propose we get the rag head muslims that want to kill us, our wives, and our children, then burn our homes and kill our live stock to sit down and have a little chat about how to resolve our problems? you cant negotiate with those people. if you have a snake in your house, you can pick it up and throw out out in the yard, you'll get bitten, you have to chop its head off. we have to deal with these people the way we did at viena in the 1600s, thoroughly beat them down and bottle them up for a thousand years.

Sure, freeing a country of its EVIL dictator is "blowing" money. And I guess you'd rather Saddam get WMDs and use them on us, right?
