Your lawn needs approx. 1 inch of water per week. Depending on what area of the country you live in, you may need to water for 30 mins twice a week, or 1 hour, once a week.
If you have a clay based soil - 1hr. 1 X weekly
If you have a loose soil - 30 mins 2 X weekly
If you have a sandy soil - 20 mins 3 times weekly.
In addition to this, you have a grass type...and different grasses require different amounts of water.
Whatever you do, never, ever water lat in the evening or at night. Early am (4:30- 5ish) is optimum. Fungus grows when the foliage remains wet through the night. After the sun is up, evaporation takes place rapidly.
Hope this helps.

Most will agree early morning watering. I went a step further in the flower beds and I use "Soaker" hoses. This has less evaperation.
Lawns is a try this and that until you find what works best. The worst thing you can do to a lawn is under-water in drought conditions causing the roots to actually grow up to the shallow moisture near the surface.
If you must water, at least put what would amount to a inch of water on the lawn.

The best time to water your lawn is in the very early morning or early evening after the sun goes down. You never water plants, lawns, or flowers. in the middle of the day when the temps are hot. The water will evaporate very quickly & dry your lawn, flowers, & plants. Water your lawn no more than twice weekly. Make sure there are no watering bans if effect.

Very early in the morning so that the water can soak in. Evening watering invites lawn fungus.

Morning, how much depends on where you live, if you get enough rain on a regular basis, no problem, if not, depending on how dry, some like it hot, some don't. regardless, don't water at night or after the sun goes down, it will only draw molds, fungus, & disease, pretty much, water so the sun will have time to dry it. Critters don't like the heat either, If they are out, Don't water. If it is too hot for them?????

You can water in the morning and the evening. If you have bluegrass do not water in the evening in the summer as this promotes the growth of fungus.
