It's not a done deal yet. He's only agreed to negotiate. If Bush allows some benchmarks, the Republicans will have the proper spin ready to distinguish these from timetables.

I think he is wasting time so he can keep the war going until it is dumped on the dems when they win the presidency in 08. Then the blame shifts over to the dems if a terrorist attack occurs in the united states even though it is homeland securities job to protect domestic terrorism which was created by George "da chimp" Bush

How did he back down. He said over a year ago he would never accept a withdrawal plan that included timetables, which he did not. He did say that he would consider a plan that included benchmarks for completion. Which they are now talking about. You people are amazing. First you yell and scream because he won't compromise then you bash him because they are going to the table to discuss a compromise. You act like your five years old.
Edit - Westhill FYI there is a difference between benchmarks and a timetable.

The benchmarks he is willing to accept are different that a withdrawl timetable the dems were demanding before.
Its not the same thing. Having some accountablility and reporting of progess isnt a bad thing.

"Conservatives"
Dwight Eisenhower was a conservative
(but was to the left of most Democratic candidates today)
These Bush supporters are not conservatives
These Bush supporters are Fascists
We do a real disservice to actual conservatives when we label the Bush supporters conservative
I disagree with conservatives, but our differences are in the method....... of protecting the Constitution, serving the people
I hate fascists. Their goal is to turn our nation over to right wing religious extremists and multinational corporations. Fascists hate the Constitution, freedom, democracy....
Bush supporters are fascists...not conservatives

It depends what he does. Just because he's agreed to meet with them and negotiate doesn't mean he's going to agree to their timetable, to their ideas about what milestones the Iraqi government must meet. It doesn't mean he won't veto irresponsible partisan bills.
So, until I see what the outcome of this is, all it means is that he will talk with them. Perhaps he will pursuade them to put US interests ahead of their own political aspirations.

Everything that Mr. Bush does is God's will so they accept it as joyously as they accept everything else He has done. Obviously God has changed His mind.

They will say it was always his plan to do this! It was a clever trick to lure Democrats into a political victory, then SLAM them with another political victory!

They are too stupid to have an original thought without it being told to them by Faux news, Rush Slimeball and the RNC.

I think its good that maybe congress and the president are learning to work together and that for anything to get done it has to be that way........
was that a spin?????
