Biking in Arlington VA?
I'm moving to the area (Clarendon) in about two weeks and I'm very excited. I'm planning on utilizing the metro fully to my work in Alexandria. How quality are the biking routes in the area? i.e. is it possible to bike to metro stations or is it much easier to walk.
I'm from Wisconsin, and I hear the humidity is intense in the summer.. so riding a bike from Clarendon to Alexandria might make me too stinky and sweaty for work :D
Any comments on biking in the area?

You can certainly bike to metro stations, but you can only take your bike on the metro outside rush hour (and on weekends). Due to this, some people "stage" a bike at a metro station near their work, and use different bikes before and after their train ride. It's called a bike-train-bike commute. However, if your work is within a mile of a metro station, it's probably not worth leaving a bike there when you could just walk it.
If your work provides showers (as some do), you could also put off your morning shower until you get to work. That way, you can bike all the way there and not worry about how you smell.
The close-in DC area in general is very bike-friendly, at least compared to some of the further-out suburbs.

There are some great bike routes in the area. If you want to bike to work, or at least partway, check the metro bus routes; bicycles are not allowed on the trains during rush hour but most busses have bike racks mounted right on the front of the bus. Metro stations also are good targets for bike theives; no matter how crappy the bike or how many locks you put on it, it'll get stolen sooner or later. So if you're going to bike to work, either bike all the way or do the bike-and-bus thing and keep your bike at your office.
Commuting by bicycle is getting more popular so many employers are used to sweaty, stinky employees... check to see if your office building has a gym in it (many newer buildings in the Alexandria area do) and if so, buy a membership and have a shower when you arrive.

There is a metro station right in Clarendon so maybe you are close enough that there's no need to bike to that side of your commute.
Otherwise there is a bike trail that runs along the river from Key bridge to Alexandria. Actually all the way to Mountt Vernon. It's a pretty ride although it can be quite busy on nice days. You can just ride down Wilson Blvd from Clarendon to get to it at Rosslyn.
Also there is a bike trail (custis trail) that runs along rt 66 then connects with the W&OD trail which runs all the way to Purcevillie. That won't get you to work but it's another nice convenient trail for biking.

If you bike slowly even with the humidity you would not get that much sweatier biking. Arlington has some of the best biking available in the DC area so take advantage of it. If you can afford it I would just have a bike at each station so you don't have to haul a hefty bike onto the Metro. (In the long run, it's much cheaper because you'll be saving on gas.)
