How do we prepare a house in Florida for several months absence?

Someone said put bleach in the toilet. Keep the air conditioner on. Cover the toilet with plastic wrap to stop dehydration. Any other tips? The more info, the better.

Bleach in the toilets is a good idea! Keep the air on. I see no reason to cover toilets with plastic wrap though. Fridge on, perishables out. Unplug things like TVs, computers, microwaves, clothes dryer and washer. Turn the water valves off that go into the washer - you don't want to chance a leak! Go on line to stop your mail and newspapers. Let your neighbors know that you are leaving and when you are expected to return and maybe leave a key with one of them. They can go in your home weekly and water plants and check for possible problems. You might also want to contact your city police. Hire a neighbor kid to mow and water your lawn, and timers on inside lamps and radios are also a good idea. Don't forget to leave a contact number with your neighbor --- in case there is a problem, you can be notified. Also ask a neighbor to park their car in your driveway on occasion, to make it look like someone is at home.

I live in FL...do NOT leave the fridge open....

DO leave the ac on...the inside of a house in FL WILL develop a moss thats black and hangs from everything, even the ceiling. so make sure the house is clean and DRY before you leave it and NO FOOD. (cockroaches and mice love leftovers) make sure all the windows are closed. you can empty the toilets by turning off the water and flushing the toilets. keep the lids down. Give a key to a neighbor or trusted friend to make sure the house is looked after in your absense. If you have a lawn, make sure someone does the lawn or keeps the yard up, so that it looks like someone is living there...remember to stop the paper and the mail...you can turn off the water main outside...remember the house doesn't need to be cold, just cool enough to keep it dry...

First off make sure there is no paper or mail deliveries. Put a light timer on a lamp or 2. Make sure your yard is kept up, water, mowing etc. I would call your utilities company ask them. Remove all live plants inside let a neighbor take care of them. Make sure there are no perishables in the frig. Give your neighbor your number for where you will be ( or cell) They could call you if there is a problem.

The first tips are good. However I am sure about the air conditioner tip. Anyone who doesn't leave it on will come back to a nasty collection of mold on everything.

Getting an alarm company is another good idea.

Unplug the fridge and leave the doors on it open when you leave. Turn off the water. Not too sure about the air conditoner part though..unless you set it to go on when it hit sthe mid 80's inside the house.
