How to paper train Min Pins?

She has no problems peeing on the paper that is in her cage but when it comes to pooping she will try and do it else where. She also sleeps and eats in this cage...could that be the problem? I have read that Min Pins do not like to poop where they eat or sleep.

Get rid of the papers and pee pads. Get a decent crate and housebreak her properly to go outside. It's a dog not a cat.

You shouldn't be putting your pup in a cage that is big enough for her to sleep on one end and potty on another. the point of the cage is to help teach puppy NOT to potty while you're not home (among various other things). My pup never pottied in his cage because it was too small for him to have a toilet and a bed. He chose to have a bed. I did train him on puppy pads, though. I started by cleaning his potties with the puppy pad. Then I'd take the dirty pad to the back door (where I'd eventually teach him to go outside). He did the same thing with poops... But, I would do the same thing... move his poops to the pad and show him. He caught on very quickly. But, This was always while i was home. I never gave him water while I was at work. Therefore, it made it easier for himto hold it. Also, when I was home, I set the microwave timer and took him out ten minutes after he drank water or ate... then as he got bigger, I adjusted the timer to 15 minutes, then 20... that way I was in control of his potties... not him... So... with all that I had him fully potty trained in a little over a month.

First off they are very smart dogs...try the following...after she eats, naps or plays place the paper away from her cage & take her to the paper. I always placed my paper by a door...ie: front or back & remember they will make mistakes...DO NOT punish, just take them to the paper & it won't take long for them to figure it out. When they use the paper rewaed them with plenty of praise & a treat. These dogs can be a trying experience because they are so smart...if you like a perputually 2 yr. old, then the min-pin is your dog!

Most dogs dont like to use the bathroom close to where they eat and sleep. Maybe getting a bigger cage would help? If thats not an option, try puppy pads... for some reason dogs are attracted to use them. Best of luck.

Yep, dogs DO NOT like to do their business in their sleeping/eating habitat. I also have a min pin/jack russell mix and I use those training pads that you can buy cheap at Walmart. I put mine in the bathroom and it seems to work well. Maybe you should give it a try !! Good Luck !!

  • No dogs like to "GO" where they live. Whaty I did was connect two crates put the bed/food in one and then newspaper in the other. I just took the doors of the crates and then connected the two by tieing them together with leashes. Hope this helps..it really works
