Heightened sense of smell and hearing? normal?

I am 8 weeks along and I can smell things that no one else can.

Like I can smell the trash that no one else can smell unless they open the lid.

Also, I have had to start sleeping with ear plugs, because my husband's breathing wakes me up.

All of that is normal! I'm in my 2nd pregnancy and the first thing I notice is how heightened my sense of smell was in this pregnancy and when I was pregnant with my daughter. I hate it. Its like when someone comes from outside, I could smell who ever it was 3 feet away. I cant eat Chinese food, or be around trash. Your sense of smell will wind down around your 3rd month of pregnancy or in some women, it will last until postpartum, or after the baby has been born. Every pregnancy is different, some will experience it (sense of smell), some don’t. Honestly I thought I was the only one that had that crazy Bloodhound German Shepherd type sense of smell!

Best thing to do is stay away from stinky stuff! And it would be best to have your husband to take things to the trash and take the trash out for you.

As far as the hearing, that could be another heightened sense. Pregnancy hormones bring out the best in our senses, for the benifit of the baby and yourself.

The smell thing really freaked me out. Just for laughs in the morning my friends will bring their Tim Horton's coffees and other drinks by and have me guess what's in it just from smelling it. I am right about 90% of the time, some of the herbal teas I am not familiar with LOL.

When anyone in a 3 block radius cuts their grass I can tell. I can also tell you if they had a lot of dandelions when they cut the grass. Not so bad on weekdays but Saturday mornings are overwhelming when so many people are out there working on their lawns.

Some of it is weird though, rotten trash smells like laundry soap to me. The cleaning stuff they use in the washrooms at work burns my nose now. I checked and it's the same stuff they have been using for years and it's all natural stuff on top of that so it's just me. The smell of pizza is revolting (god I used to love pizza) but the smell of oranges is the best (I hadn't eaten or drank orange juice in probably 20 years).

Wait till your taste buds change (and they will soon if your sense of smell changes since they are so inter related).

As for the noise, I think it's probably because you just aren't sleeping as well. I was so anxious and nervous when I found out that I had a hard time getting into a deep sleep. So every little sound bugged me. Now the roles are reversed because I have the stuffy nose syndrome and I snore like a freight train. Hubby sleeps on the couch now LOL.

Honey, I'm 13 wks. pregnant and I can smell stuff a mile away!! It's so frustrating!! I don't have any hearing super powers, though!! Sorry on that one!! LOL!! Anyway, it is normal to have a heightened sense of smell but I'm not sure about the hearing!! I don't know what to tell you but just to bear it!! That's really all you can do! I know it gets frustrating with all the smells and sounds but it the end it's worth it!! Good luck...

My sense of smell was off and on for the first little while. Now I am 16w pregnant and it's high, so don't be concerned. :) I also noticed a better sense of hearing during the first tri. It has since calmed down some, so there's hope for sleeping at night. My husband snores while breathing out of his mouth and I had the same problem with sleeping at night. It was so noisy! It has since stopped (my not being able to sleep next to him) or I have gotten used to it again... Good luck!

    Good Luck.
