How do you deem who is "unworthy" of your respect?

In an earlier question, a bitter young man mentioned that Christians, who believe in "fairy tales," are not even worthy of his respect (http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index;_ylt=AtEGQ... So my question to you is, "what makes one unworthy of your respect?"

How do you deem someone "unworthy" or "beneath you"? What is your standard?

Update:

Lucky, actually, I meant the questioner - I didn't detect any bitterness in your answer to that question. Thanks for your response.

There is no one that is unworthy of my respect. Every human being, no matter what they have done, is human and needs to be treated as such. This is the basis of all human rights. I absolutely disagree with the young man. I might consider an idea not worth of respect, but not the person that holds it.

    Source(s): I am a humanist atheist
  • I try to make a point of giving everyone respect because from my perspective God has made each and every one of us. I may not agree with their actions, words, or ideologies but I will try my hardest not to get into the mindset that others can be "beneath" me. If I started thinking like that then I would be no better then those that I have judged.

We are all in the same boat. Poor, rich, red and yellow, black and white, every religion, every culture and every group of people are on the same earth and are all headed to the same ending; death. Everyone will go to one place or the other after they die, there are only two destinations after death. If we could all realize how connected we are to each other, then no one would be considered unclean or unworthy. I totally agree with you, I like the point you are making, right on.

    I'd rather rephrase :

"How do you deem who is "Worthy" of your respect?

Since I believe our existance is for positive progress (negative has a equal role too)

So the obvious answer is WHO makes the most significant contribution toward The Progress of mankind - deserved the utmost respect from all of us

    Cheers

When someone is dishonest or a hypocrite, that will cause me to lose respect for that person. Also, anyone that physically hurts another, especially a child, isn't worthy of respect. You know...a bully!

    God Bless.

I'm going to assume you meant me, although I am neither young, nor bitter

When I see someone tell me or someone else I'm going to burn in hell because I will not follow their religion, I have no respect for that person.

When someone tell me directly that I am unhappy without their god in my life, I have no respect for someone like that

When someone tells me they choose to believe that every person who does not accept Jesus as their savior will burn eternally - no matter how good that person is - I cannot respect that person

How, or why should I respect that person ?

I respect their right to believe that way but I don't have to respect them

Respect, like admiration is something that's earned

it's very sad that there are people in this world that are so intolerable of other peoples' beliefs. i definately don't respect that person.... i pity him.

how do i determine if someone is worthy of respect? well, they have to earn it. tolerance and intelligence are the two greatest determining factors for me. they can be opinionated, but also realize they aren't the only ones with thoughts.

Nobody starts out as being "unworthy" of respect. They have to earn their place down there.

I have respect for all. However, it can be wittled down by those that don't respect me. I truely believe what you send out comes back threefold, so i do not like to disrespect. I do respect myself, and will stand up for myself, even if it means some disrespect to the one walking all over me. I don't mind tripping them.

All people are worthy of respect. They are created in the Imago Dei
