What does this female pose mean?
I see a lot of women going about with their arms crossed against their upper abdomen and base of the breasts, with their hands tucked into their armpits. I'd like to know why. I am curious. I think it looks odd.
It makes it appear as though they are attempting to:
(a) hide their boobs
(b) support their boobs
(c) warm their boobs
(d) ALL of the above
(e) something else entirely different than above, such as negative body language - e.g. bad mood, feeling defensive, etc.
Note: There appears to be no common denominator as a deliberate reason for this pose, e.g. strangers, family, friends, weather, temperature, clothing, etc. I notice countless women sporting this pose, anywhere, anytime, any clothing.
I suppose I could even add more possibilities, such as:
(f) her hands or fingers are cold (but why then do I still see this pose, in excess, even if it's 90 degrees Fahrenheit?)
(g) her arms are tired
I really think poster "sparky52881" is on to something here. I didn't even consider "the jiggle factor." I suppose attempting to hide them, and attempting to keep them from jiggling, while related, may be two entirely different things. Jiggling boobs would draw more attention than boobs just being there.
I like Anne D's suggestion a lot too. That sounds very feminine.
To those who disagree with my observations: I have seen women doing this pose, standing still, sitting down, and yes, even while walking.
The arm-crossers stand out to me, particularly because the pose appears un-natural, as one poster noted.
I would also add that I witness young women (age 29 or less) use this pose, more than older women do. I'm not sure why this is, but I can speculate that, perhaps, it may be due to older women may have more confidence than younger women do.

I don't think it has anything to do with our boobs. At times I find myself doing it because I feel insecure and or I'm on the defensive and or I am hiding something; it all depends upon what is going on around me at the time.

Um. It's pretty awkward to walk with your arms crossed. They're designed to swing in rhythm with the opposite leg, and this keeps the body balanced in movement.
So I don't believe you that women are "going around" everywhere like this. It is a standing, waiting position often taken up when someone is pissed off, annoyed, or feeling confrontational, or just doesn't have anything better to do with her arms, as is often the case for me.
And what is with you guys thinking everything a woman does revolves around her breasts?
Source(s): Studied the anatomy of movement for various college dance classes and as a Pilates instructor _____________ I'll venture you only notice this because you're apparently most interested in that part of the female body. - aoayLv 44 years ago
i might have enjoyed to have seen your expression once you observed her image! you have injury her a great deal and characteristic advised her which you remorseful approximately what you probably did. provide her time and endurance and love. She'll come around. take a seat and talk ordinary techniques on a thank you to repair the themes on your marriage. You the two understand there are issues, so now discover some suggestions. in case you experience she would not savour you, provide her examples of what she has carried out interior the previous that made you experience good (focus on the positives particularly of affirming her blunders, you will come to a answer plenty swifter).

The only time I carry myself the way you are describing is when it is cold weather outside, or a man is staring at my chest.
You may draw your own conclusions as to why you see it 'all the time" even in warm weather. Try having some manners and park your eyes elsewhere.
Good luck

It generally means "back off". It's a closed pose and usually signifies they are not looking for anything (as in - getting hit on). I think the scanty clothing most women wear makes them feel protective this way and they are unaware of it.

It's not about their boobs. Most women tend NOT to pay that much attention to them. It's just a comfortable pose for women. It's almost like a hug to yourself, and women often like that feeling of friendship and the 'safe' feeling they get from it.

I do it to hide my boobs if I feel like one popped out of my bra and I am not in a situation where I can fix it. I also do this when I am nervous or feeling extra-self-conscious.

I do that sometimes if I'm cold.....but like someone else said, I think it's mostly a comfort thing. It's a comfortable pose for me, and it makes me feel....I don't know, safe? Secure? And sometimes I do it when I'm irritated. It's complicated, I guess.

Yeah, I sometimes in public cross my arms over my boobs, because they're annoying, I want them to be smaller.

Well, whenever I walk like this, it is usually either because I haven't bothered to throw a bra on but don't want to give anyone a free show, or I'm freaking cold.
