Is there any other operating systems other than microsoft?

Dude if you have to ask this question then you don't know enough to build your own PC

There are many operating systems. If you want to build your own, chances are you will use Intel chips. Therefore it will be an O/S that runs on Intel. If you are excluding Microsoft, then probably Macintosh is excluded too. Are you excluding them because you want to keep the cost down?

If so, the most likely alternative is Linux, which is free, although many people use the RedHat installation for $70 or whatever just because it makes life easier. There are lots of Microsoft-ish tools out there, like Open Office, which are replacements for MS Office, and GUIs that you can use as well in place of the command line. Most are free.

check out an operating sys called Simply Mepis 6.5 It is great, way better that Mickyquish (oops: Microsoft) It works closer to what you are used too and it's free. Download ISO and burn on disk and try it as a live CD
