Buying last year's model...?

How much of a discount should I expect to negotiate when buying a new 2006 that is still on the lot 6-8 months into the next model year?

(Answers in Percent of window sticker price would be appreciated) I'm looking at a Nissan Pathfinder - sticker price about $33k+, currently advertised for $30,600.

Update:

What I really want to know is: How low can I go? Will the dealer possibly take a small loss just to get old inventory off the lot?

The 2008 models will be there in August. If you buy the '06 now your three month old car will be two years old in August and valued as a used 2 years old car. If you keep a car like forever then buying this old new car may be OK for you. But if you think you may trade in 5 or 6 years the only way this would be a wise purchase is if you paid no more than $25,000! But be careful. If you offer $25,000 the dealer may take it.

Do you realise that no matter what you pay for it even at dealer cost it is not worth the money. The 2008 models are around the corner. This vehicle is almost 2 years old. If you were to take out a 5 year loan for it and had to get out of the loan or the car was wrecked you would owe a ton more on the loan then the car is worth. If I was going to buy a Pathfinder at all I would buy new model when they first come out not 8-10 months into the model year or in this case almost 2 years into the model year. What is wrong with this Pathfinder that it has been sitting unsold for over a year. I would avoid this deal. The difference between cost and sticker on this car is about 17%. If you can't buy it for cost walk away. I would also avoid the Pathfinder all together. There are so many better vehicles out there for that money

You should definitely ask for more. Pathfinder's generally are Gas guzzlers... I mean they have a very bad reputation for being thirsty for fuel. So if you are going to go for it I would suggest to go really low. Trust me, the dealerships will be aching to sell those things especially the Summer being very near. Right now people are panicking over the rising gas prices and the dealerships will not fancy carrying these SUVs for another month... So they will work with you. Try asking $27k and go up to about $28.5k.

Depends upon the true value of the vehicle (check Kelly Blue Book, etc.) and whether the dealership needs to unload to make room for new stock. I've had the best negotiations at the end of the month...when the dealers are striving to make their sales quotas.

From my experience you can get as low as 5%+ actual cost

so you have to do some resarches to know the actual cost of the car (try the web site)

forget the sticker price as this is the retail price they don't ever sell with that one
