Movie: The Notebook?

ok. i have a bone to pick. i think the mother's character was not well developed. if she had only explained to the audience somehow her motives Behind hiding the letters from allie for that long...besides the obvious of not wanting her to marry poor.

i think mother & daughter needed a Showdown. the mother needed to have broken her facade a bit somehow, like this:

1) "I did this for YOU. you didn't know what you were doing! i was Forced to make that decision for you!"

2) "If i can't be happy, why should YOU be allowed to!"

either of these (and perhaps other lines) would've really added some oomph to the mother's reasons for doing what she did. instead she showed allie the guy she pined over. that was lame.

something along these lines, i think, would've given us (and allie) some understanding into why the mother was crazy b****. instead, she shows allie the guy she watches sometimes at the lumber yard. that is the absolute stupidest explanation Ever imo.

Update:

what did u think about that part?

well can u imagine how long that movie would have been if they went into that detail.I think the guy in the lumber yard was symbolic enough.. i duno i got..but try reading the book. it tends to have more detail about the characters. mayb it'll give you some more insight on the mothers character.

I loved that movie. I never really got as deep into the plot, but now that I give it thought. The moms character was wierd anyways. The writer probably had a closed off distant mother. I guess she (the mom) wanted her daughter to know that she pined for a working class. but chose not to rock the social boat. rich with rich. working class with working class. It was a sweet movie though...The holiday can be picked apart too. but it made me fall in LOVE with Jude Law..

the mother did what she did because the boy really had nothing to offer her. He wasn't at her say financial level or class. And she also told her daughter that she was also in love with a man of a lower class and she left him so that she could be with her father that was of higher class. But i think te way the movie portrayed her was good but just my opinion but i do understand where your coming from also.
