He was killed on Okinawa and remains one of the highest ranking military commanders killed in action by the enemy.
He was also a bigot, when commanding troops in Alaska, he opposed black soldiers. He said that he feared they would cross breed with Alaska Natives and produce "the ugliest race the world has ever seen."
