    in simple terms:

when a player hits the puck from one end to the other. if it reaches the other end of the ice without anyone touching it, it's called icing.

the rule prevents players from doing this because when icing happens, the whistle blows and the play is stopped and the puck is brought back to the other side. it keeps teams who are getting just overwhelmed by shots from simply kicking the puck out to the other end. it would make the game really boring.

no effect on scoring but sometimes it is done intentionally and there is one benefit even if the puck is brought back. the team that is on defense and is getting too many shots and can't stop them will sometimes comit icing in order to change line ("changing lines" means bringing players from the bench who are rested).

so if your defensive players are getting really tired and they cannot ge the puck out of the zone, they fling it out and comit icing,

Note: the benefit is not that great and icing is rarely done on purpose.

The rule of icing is key to hockey play. The rule is intended to keep defending teams from just smacking the puck to the other end of the rink every time they were pressured by the offense. This would make it even more difficult to score and would also make the game a bit boring.

Icing is called when a player his the puck across the red line towards the attack zone and:

The puck is not aimed at the net.

The puck must get all the way to the other end of the rink without a defender being able to touching it. This is up to the linesmen to determine.

If an offensive player touches the puck before or just after it hits the other end of the rink, there is no icing.

Icing is not called on the short handed team during a power play.

If icing is called then the puck comes all the way back to the defensive zone for a face-off.

Icing has no effect on the score of the game. It is when a team shoots the puck across the centerline and behind the opposing goal line without being touched by any other players. When it crosses the red goal line of the opposing team, they touch the puck and icing is called. The next faceoff is in the zone of the team who committed the icing violation.

Note that icing can not be called when one team is on a power play or if the goalie touches the puck first. Also, if a member of the team that ices the puck touches the puck first, the icing call is waived off.

  • its when you dump the puck past the other teams crease line(the one that runs directly in front of the goal posts), when you are on your side of the center line without anyone touching the puck until it crossed the line, BUT! if your team touches the puck )after it crosses the line) first the icing is canceled out

Dumping the puck into a zone from behind the red line, or two lines basically.
