a player on 1 team gets a penalty for 2 or more minutes and his team instead of having 5 on the ice they have 4 while the opposing team has 5 so its 5 on 4. The team with 5 has a Man power advantage

Power play - occurs when the other team commits a penalty and one (or more) of their hockey players has to go to the penalty box. One team now has more players on the ice. The team with the penalty players in the box has to subtract the player or players that are in the box from the ice, they can not replace the players who were taken to the penalty box.

This is when one team has more players on the ice than the other team (the shorthanded team). This is usually due to a penalty.

If a player is penalized, his team has to play 2 or more minutes shorthanded. (or w/ one player less)
