What do you do when you tell your crush you like him but you stay friends. But he's acting strange around you?

I have a crush for a couple months on this one kid. I became friends with him. Then one day someone told me that my crush hated me I asked him and he said no. Then a couple days later I told him I like him . He only likes me as a friend so we remained friends. I told him about my ex bf about how he abused me. He would always go back and forth about supporting me if I went back with my ex. Things were going great. Then there was a rumor going around about him being gay and I asked him if he knew I guess he did I'm not sure and ever since then I haven't talked to him. Then I decide to talk to him yesterday he said hey to me and thats it. Then my friend tells me that my crush thinks I'm mean. And I don't know what I did/say to him. I'm always nice to him . Should I ask him and talk to him about how he is acting? He acts like this is a game in a way but in a way I'm not sure he reilzes he's doing it.. What should I do, do i say I'm sorry even though I'm not sure what I did.
