What kinda breed of dog is the best mate for a Basset?
I have a six year old basset hound - harveylisous . Want to get another dog as hounds are happier in packs. Has anyone out there gotta basset with another dog and if so how is it working out?? Are should I stick to the same breed??

I have a 6 yr. old basset and a 4 yr. old bloodhound mix. They are thicker than thieves. If you separate one to go to the vet or groomer then the other is pitiful until his buddy gets home. It is really funny sometimes! A hound is happier with another dog because they are pack oriented. When we got the bloodhound for Stanley it worked out great and Stanley is not so lonely anymore because he has a companion when we are at work during the day.

Hello... I have had a basset hound for about 4 years now. They are such a sweet breed. About 13 months ago a stray beagle came to our house and I took him in. They became the best of friends. Both dogs are male and they haven't had one fight or marked in the house. Mickey and Charley do absolutely everything together. My suggestion for a mate is a beagle. They are extremely loving and affectionate. He is also wonderful with my 2 year old.

Find a Basset rescue and a great friend for your Harvey. They are pack animals but Harvey has been King for a long time. A spayed female basset might be your best bet. Good luck.

My sister-in-;aw had a basset and I gave them a chihuahua and the 2 dogs get long great. It is so funny to see them together. The chihuahua sleeps on the basset's back.

I think it really depends on your dog. Does he take well to new dogs? Does he greet little or big dogs better? If its a little dog that he prefers, how about a beagle? If its larger, how about another basset hound? You could go to a shelter, and take your dog, and see which one he gets along with. If they play well, and seem happy together.
