The two world wars.?
Why do some Americans have the feeling that they won the 1st and 2nd World Wars unaided? As an example, the Battle of Britain was over in 1940. The British Airforce won that one. By the time the Japanese attacked Pearl Harbour and the Americans joined the war in 1942 Britain was on the offensive against the Germans.

psssst Tony .. did you never watch fawlty Towers .... NEVER MENTION THE WAR .. ;) least NEVER question american involvement .... as many ( not all btw ) get rather teste and insulted that we all don't bow down in enternal gratitude for them coming in late BOTH times ..
what was it late 1917 .. when already both sides had bled the fields of Europe red... AND then in 1941 .. ONLY after their interests were attacked ... ( oh hangon THAT was the same in WW1 when the germans started bombing american ships)
thing is .. .anybody who really knows ANYTHING about ANY of the wars KNOWS that it was a massive joint effort ... NOT one nation could have won the war on their own... and It's only an extremely arrogant point of view that expresses ONE nation's efforts resulted in victory....
In World War one .. the Kiwis and the Canadians declared war almost as soon as Britain did .. and the Aussies were close behind ... Allied troops fought brilliantly together.
By the time ( and this Is NOT meant as an insult to Americans) the American troops go to europe in WW1 .. The germans were already sending extremely young men to war ... their power was declining .. YES THE FRESH UNBLOODIED, UNWAR-WEARIED AMERICAN TROOPS HELPED .. but GOD help any Yank that tells me WE owe them ....
in times of trouble .. we help because we can and we should NOT because we expect eternal Gratitude ...
(EDIT:: I just want to say to most other americans, I don't disrespect you ... just the arrogant who live among you who think you are better than the rest of the world)
EDIT 2 .. rastus .. as a matter of interest ... did you not consider that had the United states entered World War One much much earlier that the Russian Revolution MAY not have taken place and therefore your point about Stalin may have been MUTE....
had The USA entered WW1 much earlier it may have taken the strain off the Russian army .. and therefore given the Bolshoviks less influence over public opinion, and reduced the demand for revolution .. and Russia MAY never had become a communist nation ...
and let's get even siller with what if and may haves ( which is all we other allies get when we try and tell the arrogant americans [nb not meaning all americans] that they didn't win the war alone) ....If the americans had of entered WW1 earlier .. maybe an american soldier would have killed young Corperal Hitler .. and world war two would have never occured ( least NOT the one we know)
EDIT THREE , My great grandfather fought in France ... and I WILL never expect a french national to THANK ME.. I thank THEM for remembering .. Villes Bretoneux (sp)
EDIT FOUR:
rockandroll58-79 ~ i *think* the ALLIED FORCES won the wars ... I have NEVER seen any text book that singles out one nation's efforts above anothers.. and if i did .. I'd burn it!

We certainly did not win the war alone, but I question some of your other statements, particularly that Great Britain was "on the offensive" against Germany in 1942. Before the U.S. entered the war, Britain had exhausted her cash reserves and German U-boats were slaughtering British ocean commerce to the point that the Brits were facing the possibility of widespread hunger. Britain had lost huge amounts of materiel in the fiasco at Dunkirk. Americans were actually donating sporting arms to make up some of the losses.
We did not win the war alone, but we played an enormous role. Would Britain have been able to create anything equivalent to the 8th Air Force? The fleets of landing craft and divisions of infantry for the Normandy invasion? The airplanes and warships that ended the U-boat threat? No, no and no.
I think you need to read more. A lot more.

The americans definitely helped with their resources and the particular fact that mainland america was never a battle ground. (Partly the reason why U.S became a major power after the war, not because they were so great like contemporary Americans like to think, but because European countries were devastated and needed supplies from outside.)
America wasnt particularly influential in the first world war, but the resources and manpower definitely swung the favour to the allies in the second. Without U.S help Britain would have struggled in Europe im sure, and maybe not brought about the destruction of the Nazi's but rather just constrained them for a later date.
However, for ANY country to say they were the ones responsible for winning the wars is absolutely arrogant and disrespectful of their Allies who also were instrumental in winning as a team effort.
I doubt whether U.S would have been so effective against the Japanese without the incredible amount of help and support they got from the British, Canadians, Australians, and New Zealanders (amoung the many) that combined to push Japan out of the pacific.

I'm not gonna say much , but , if the Americans didnt come and help, all of Europe would more than likely be speaking Russian right now , Stalin knew he couldnt take on the Americans ,especially with the Americans having the A-bomb, The Russians would have defeated the Germans eventually even if the Americans had not joined , Do you actually think that Stalin would have stopped in Germany , he wouldve occupied France and everybody else , SO next time you see a dumb american, you ought to thank his granfathers who gave there lives for YOUR freedom , saving all you ungrateful Europeans from both the Germans and the Russians

The Americans saved themselves from massive losses by staying out of both World Wars untill they were both half over ! The English used their Colonialist as cannon fodder and to succeed where they failed ! The French showed how pathetic they were as a fighting Nation with Australian, New Zealand and Canadian Battalions constantly defending and saving their homeland. The English refused to release Australian troops from doing "their" work in Africa to defend our homeland against the Japs. Untill Pearl Harbour was bombed the US convieniently stayed out of it ! Read some History and tell me whos wrong !

If it weren't for us Americans, you would be speaking German right now.
Be glad you don't. The german language is the most destructive sounding language on earth, and it's also very annoying to listen to in the mornings.
