My dog sits on his hip rather than squatting, could this lead to back problems later in life?

He is a 1.5 year old hound mix (basset, fox hound, blood hound, and probably some shiba inu), we rescued him about 5 months ago from a shelter. I just want to know if his posture will cause problems later so I can be prepared to catch them early. He has no known health problems currently, he is at the proper weight and doesn't have the long saggy body of a typical basset.

Alot of labs I know do this and my vizsla does it sometimes too. Actually now that I think about it my chi does it sometimes and kicks his feet over to the side, looks like he is "lounging"! If he does it all the time it may be a hip issue but I think it is just more comfortable. If he is in pain or having problems doing any activities I would have him checked out. I guess all I can say is I know a lot of dogs that do this and they are all fine.

The worst thing (in my opinion) that could happen is that if there is no fat around his hips, he could rub up against the floor too much, and the skin around his hips could shred. I know, gorey, but it is true. It might cause ack problems, but you should visit the vet to see if there isn't somethign already wrong with him that is making him sit on his hips.

No, I think most dogs do sometimes. I think it's kind of a lazy sit. I bet if you told him to sit with a treat in your hand (if he knows this "trick") he will sit properly.

its possible he may already have spinal problems. Of course you may want an opinion from a vet. but i work with animals every day so the best thing to do is go to your vet.

I'm not sure but if you tell him to sit, and he sits the wrong way, correct him and when he does it the right way, correct him. I think it is just a way of relaxing more. all dogs do it
