My cat can't stand closed doors?

We have a house cat and whenever we go to bed at night and close the bedroom door he scratches at the door throughout the night waking us up regularly. We have tried leaving the door open so he can come in the bedroom but this results in an equally bad nights sleep as he's biting toes and jumping about on the bed.

What can we do to stop him scratching at the door and keeping us awake?

Putting him out for the night isn't really an option as we live on a busy main road - hence the reason to keep him as a house cat.

Good ol fuzzy kitty, brings back memories of my cat Fuzzy. He'd do the same thing, he just didn't like to see us resting, it drove me nuts. A vet recommended we get a spray bottle fill it with water and each time he demonstrated the undesirable beaviour, squirt him with the spray bottle. As you well know cats aren't particularly fond of water being sprayed on or near them, and they soon catch on. As long as kitty has access to his food and water and cat box, he'll find someone else to pester. If by chance there isn't anyone else to pester, be prepared to hear all manner of odd noises during the night. This is what he does for a living, let's face it, he's good at it.

some cats can be happy indoors, but it sounds like yours probably doesn't have enough stimulation during the day?

my old cat scratches at doors when there closed, but when she's in she'll jsut settle down on the bed and sleep (more often than not on feet). In the evenings try to tire your cat out a bit, an excellent toy for this is a simple laser pen or the traditional piece of string, depends what your cat likes to play with really.

as for the feet attacking, not sure what size your bed is or anything but if you can get a sheet that will hang over the ends of the bed, that should give your feet a lil more protection.

even in door house cats need to exercise and go thru there natural processes, and naturally there hunters, if you can stimulate this act then hopefully you'll get a good nights sleep.

we have a house cat for the same reason, and we couldnt bare our cat to be one of the many poor things on the side of the road.

our cat does the same thing , only not so much now.

i found it better to have the door open , the playing with the toes doesnt seem to last as long as the scratching.

our vet said that having a house cat is a good thing to do with a cat , as long as they have never been out freely.

some people think its cruel but it really isnt as long as you allow them to roam the house.

we bought a special lead for cats and let her go in the garden too, lots of cats dont go out any more and there specially made so they can still go outside.

our cat got out once by accident , we were so worried thinking we would never see her again, our neighbour called and she was sitting on the door step the whole time.

You could put him in the kitchen for example with a few cat toys and shutting the door? that's what I did when My 2 caqts were younger. I put them out for the night though as I do not live on a busy road.

I used to have a Siamese cat who could open all the doors in the house by swinging on the handles - quite funny to see, but in the interests of a good night's sleep we had to shut her in the kitchen overnight, and put a bolt on the door!

they say cats are always on the wrong side of a locked door its because they're curious by nature. I have 2 house cats and they do the same if I lock them out, the best way to get a good nites sleep is literally ignore them, they get bored after a while

Sounds like the cat is bored - he wants company and someone to play with. I always say, you get a lot of pleasure from dogs and cats but is it fair to have just one cat or one dog. Get it another cat for company then they can amuse each other. Another thing is it sounds like a young cat/kitten. Needs toys to play with for a learning curve to know what to do with its claws etc. Remember it would have been taken away from its mum at an early stage and no one now to teach it cat behaviour.

Rub orange peel on your door. cats hate the smell for some reason. or failing that put a scratching post outside your door.

I have a cat who doesn't like closed doors, despite having a cat flap to the outdoors. He spends all night in our bedroom but, when he wants to get up in the morning, he will knock things off the dressing table and make lots of noise till one of us gets up. We have just learned to live with it!!!!

Just keep the door open a little..enough for your cat to come and go as he pleases...So what if he bites your toes....He is your little buddy...!What I usually do is take an old leather glove and put it on my hand and let her play and wear herself out...
