It definitely leaves room for a movie :)
I think a lot of people feel cheated because they wanted the flashy gun violence that a mob movie would provide (think "Godfather"). This was more of a "thinking man's" ending, and people didn't want a subtle pay off.
I like the way it ended, though, mostly because of the suspense and tension David Chase set up throughout the whole episode by lingering on shots, such as Tony sitting silently in the hospital room next to Silvio, Paulie sitting alone outside Satriale's, etc. We as an audience were waiting for that "big bang." After seven years of watching violence follow Tony and his crew, we became just as suspicious and looking-over-the-shoulder as they.
The same thing happened in the diner: we were all on-edge, suspicious of everyone in there: from the couple to the guy at the counter who keeps glancing over to the two teenagers who walk in. Even when Meadow is struggling to park it seems like she'll get broadsided and die on the side of the road (which I kind of hoped would be the case).
But I like that David Chase chose to end the show with something more simple: the family enjoying a meal together, even knowing Tony's indictment is imminent (he mentions as much to Carmela before his kids arrive). It is really the only normal moment the family has ever shared, and yet our expectations as an audience clouded it: we were suspicious of everyone, and we couldn't just "enjoy the good times," as AJ brought up that Tony had once told him.

It sucked for me because the bar I go to chose to have a goodbye Sopranos night instead of showing the NBA finals.. I mean come on, who didnt know that they weren't going to show Tony getting whacked! Regardless of how many people were pulling for that, why would the creators deny themselves the possibility of keeping the ending open and raking in money for a chance at creating a Sopranos movie.
You cant say they didnt give you a lot of killing and shooting. The worst one had to be when that guy got whacked at the gas station with his grandsons in the back of the truck, then he got his head crushed by the same truck. HAHAhahaha!!! Classic! But no way were they gonna show Tony or his family getting hurt because the name of the show is Sopranos.. They have to leave it vague..

The ending was great!
For those who think that it sucked: watch it again and pay attention to the ending credits!
Don't stop believing!

Maybe there is a SOPRANOs movie deal and they didn't want to tie it up neatly.

I was speechless and incredibly disappointed for about 10 minutes, then I figured it out and got goosebumps. It was brilliant but definitely unconventional.

I didn't see it, but from all I am hearing on the radio this morning, it sucked.
