Will porn industry help determine winner of the high-def DVD war?????
My friend recently presented me with an argument on the Hd-DVD and Blu-Ray war. He said which ever format that the porn industry has gone with has won. Porn went with VHS over Beta, DVD over Laser Disc. He stated he heard the porn industry has gone with HD-DVD, so he believes HD-DVD will win this format war. Have you ever heard this theory in regards to all the different video wars being linked to the porn industry? Does anyone have any articles supporting his theory???

That's been going around for months now, and last I heard they are still planning on going with the HD DVD. However, now that Blockbuster is going with Blue Ray it wil be interesting to see if they still go that course. There's also a Blue Ray in every PS3 so I have a hard time seeing it go away any time soon. To be honest it's the porn industry at this point that's even keeping HD DVD in the mix.
Remember HDDVD only has the backing right now from one movie studio where Blue Ray has several.
stay tuned!

I doubt it makes a difference. Supposedly porn is going HD-DVD. And supposedly porn was credited with helping VHS defeat Betamax.
Still, even if that was true, it doesn't really apply to today's format war. Back in the early 80s, you either got porn on tape or went to some seedy theater in the city. For many people VHS was the only real option for porn. That's not true today. People can get porn on the internet and there's still a large DVD market outthere. The fact porn is available on HD-DVD shouldn't really make much of a difference. People already have other options of where to get in.
Also, remember that porn sales had a much larger market of VHS sales. Remember, people never really bought many movies on VHS. So a huge chunk of the home video market was porn. Now with regular movies selling so well, porn is only a small fraction of the home video market. People's buying habits have diluted the influence of porn on the video market. I don't have specific numbers, but I'm sure porn was well north of 50% of all VHS sales. Porn is proabbly less than 5% of all DVD sales. Their market power just isn't there anymore. and without that market power, they shouldn't be deciding any format war.

I have to recognise it is a very different and interesting approach to define trends.
From a strategic point-of-view, definitely it is an input to take into account, but not necessarily the only one.
But let's work a bit on this one: Normally the 2 markets than practically define the future in technology are US and Japan. If in these countries porn industry has a big influence in the "videohome" industry, well, then it would be interesting to take a glance how these industries work.
Do they have partnerships with major video distributors? Which are their channels of distribution and how do they work together? How wary are they around technology trends?
Porn videos is definitely about mass production and distribution, unlike regular movies which are primarily done for movie theaters and then for home entertainment. So, what is easier and cheaper for them: Blu-ray or HD?
Evidently, I don't know the answer... but I hope it is Blu-ray disc since that's what I already have. :P Cheers to everyone.

I did read an article online,(don't remember where) but it did say that the porn industry would be the deciding factor. I bought the Toshiba HD-DVD player so I am betting that this will be the winner. I think this due to the price of the players.

LOL That's actually not a bad way to predict which format is going to win this disc war. Honestly, I was kind of thinking Disney and Warner Brothers would be the telling factors in which would win.
Eh, I have my cheap little DVD player that still works great so I'm hoping it'll be awhile yet. LOL
Take care!
