I want to start running again and would like some advice......?

It has been about 15 years and since then I have had a ski accident and have recovered from it, but my knee can still get sore with too much stress. I have also had two children and have gained 20 pounds so I am in average shape.

I would also like to know what kind of shoes would be recommended. I don't want to spend tons of money, but can invest a bit.

Well I don't know much about shoes, but I bet your local running store does. So I suggest that you go in and tell them your situation and I'm sure they will have the right support shoe for you. Also, don't start off too hard; you need to forget how fast you could run 15 years ago and concentrate on building up endurance. If you start running and find your knee still hurts a bit, I would go to a trainer of some sort and have them check it out. There is nothing worse than thinking you can run on a bad knee to then realize you can't run for a year because you injured yourself. But other than that, have fun!
