Where did the word "blog" originate from?

It's a shortened form of the word "weblog" or "web log."
The word weblog has been around since 1993. Originally, it was just a computerized record of the requests handled by a webserver. Then, it started to mean a website run by single human being, often in the form of a journal. The earliest known use of that meaning was in 1997.
1999 marks the first recorded use of the shortened form "blog." According to the Oxford English Dictionary, it came from www.bradlands.com, and this is it: "Cam points out lemonyellow.com and PeterMe decides the proper way to say ‘weblog’ is ‘wee'- blog’ (Tee-hee!).]"
Obviously, someone had to have been using the word earlier than that, but nobody's found it yet.

I started blogging in September 2004. The name orginated with Karl Marx, who published his "Communist Manifesto" in 1848. My blog is a takeoff on that. It's sort of like a column. I thought the name was so clever when I first thought of it, and I was delighted when a Google search revealed no blogs by that name and very few published instances of it. I have since discovered that "clever" wears off and is not the best way to come up with a blog name. Something shorter and catchier would have been better. But now I'm sort of stuck with it -- the hassle of changing names and losing links is too much.

Stands for 'web log'. A log is a chronological recording of events by ships at sea. Hence used here for a blog which is an online diary.
