If you report a false crime, what's the punishment for it by law?

This is for a novella I'm working on, trying to straighten out the facts to make it logical for my storyline.

Update:

Yes 1st offense... Rhode Island.

Usually it is a misdemeanor. First offense, probably probation and/or community service, possibly a fine. This is what might be ALLOWABLE by law. What ACTUALLY HAPPENS is most likely, nothing. Charges dismissed.

Different states have different laws regarding this matter. It is a misdemeanor punishable by up to 6 months in jail (not prison) where I live. The law is Criminal Mischief (filing a false police report). This is Louisiana law.

I suppose it would depend on several mitigating factors; the seriousness of the alleged crime, the temperment of the judge or other officials involved, and how they view you're action: was it ment to instigate, irritate or was it a misteak; were you mislead by factors beyond your control, was it an ethical thing you did, was she throwing a curve? was she in possession of her logic? can we just let this slide? Depends on the severity, mainly. But in most cases, there is no punishment and no charges are pressed. At the most it may be considered a misdemeanor.
