Does Alka-Seltzer really cure urinary tract infections?
I just heard this and it sound too good to be true. But I was told that if you start taking Alka-Seltzer as soon as symptoms begin it clears it up quickly. Does anyone have any experience with this?

Yes, you could use alka seltzer. The reason is because it is alkaline in nature, just like baking soda, or calcium citrate.
Alkalinity helps keep the bacteria that causes UTI's in check.
Calicum citrate would be my first choice, and take up to six 1000 mg capsules a day, 2 at a time.
If you take a product that is alkaline when you FIRST barely, even start to feel the effects of a UTI, drink plenty of fluids to flush the bacteria, you may be able to effectively flush your system out.
You can drink cranberry juice if you want, it is also helpful, but make sure it is low sugar.
Avoid caffine and carbonated beverages (I am not considering alka seltzer a carbonated beverage). You can even take a product like uristat or cystex to help with pain.
HOWEVER, if your symptoms continue after 2-3 days of self treatment, you must see a doctor. Unchecked UTI's can go on to cause major kidney infections that could require hospitalization.

It's been shown that cranberry supplements are only effective if they are taken on a regular basis (every day orally). In some cases the body can eliminate the bacteria on it's own, but usually antibiotics are needed. At the first sign of a UTI you should drink a lot of water in one sitting. Most cranberry juices are full of sugar and very little juice. Be sure to get one that is 100% juice and low in sugar. UTI's are usually caused by the the intestinal bacteria E. coli is the most frequent cause of UTIs.

I've never heard of that. I've had a few. When symptoms first begin, drink 2 glasses of cranberry juice (not juice cocktail) and 6 glasses of water (or about a liter) each day. You want to flush your system and make it more acidic. If your symptoms last more than a couple of days, go to the doctor before it becomes a bladder infection that will be more painful and harder to treat.

stick with cranberry juice, over-the-counter urinary tract medications at the grocery/drug store, and drink plenty of water. If you don't get better, go to the doctor. Sometimes the only way to treat these is with antibiotics. Don't mess around with rumors, stick with things that have proven to work. And don't forget to not wait too long before seeing the doctor. You run the risk of screwing up your kidneys and bladder if you let it get out of control.

Urinary tract infections are caused by bacteria. In order to "cure" a UTI, you will need an antibiotic that will kill bacteria. Alka seltzer doesn't work.

I just recovered from one and why not just go to a doctor and get antibiotics instead of fannying around with hangover cures?
