Having a toddler baptized into Catholicism?
We are going to have our almost 3 year old son baptized into the Catholic faith. I know that when you have an infant baptized they wear a white outfit called a Christening gown, but at his age would he be required to wear a white outfit? If not, what else is suitable for this occasion? I am really excited for him, but I want to follow any guidelines they have for this. I am not Catholic as of yet so that is why I am unsure. Thanks for your help.
The reason I am not yet Catholic is because I am going through the RCIA classes, my husband is Catholic (Roman Catholic to be exact). And I have tried other religions and was not happy with how hypocritical everyone was. They sat there and worshiped but when it was over they act like they are all better. I have felt most welcome and at home in this church, I love it and I truly love the Masses every Sunday. My son may only be almost 3, but he sits there with us learning, not put away in some nursery where he plays and doesn't learn , so in my proven thoughts this church has been alot better.
By the way, thanks to those who are truly answering my question, not trying to tell me that my faith is wrong. Besides doesnt the Bible also teach us not to judge????? I know that my faith does.

A white outfit is the most appropriate because white symbolizes the purity and perfection of a person's soul as a result of Baptism. It also represents a person putting on Christ in Baptism.
There should be a sacraments coordinator at the church that can help you with this. If not, just talk to the priest.
Congratulations of becoming a Catholic. I am very happy for you and your family.

My dear your question is cute and also a little intriguing. There is a lot of symbolism associated with Catholic baptism. The White gown is a symbol that through baptism we put on Jesus Christ; ie we will try to live like how Jesus would live. The white garment could be a simple white (silk possibly) sash across the shoulders to the hip. If you cannot get one the priest may be able to provide one for you. Alternatively you can dress your child all in white - that can be satisfactory too. You obviously have have some close Catholics in your family, possibly your husband and you will need a godparent too. Usually with someone that young Parents and Godparents are involved in the baptism ceremony. If you are not Catholic there is a process called the RCIA - rite of christian initiation of adults - in your parish try to make enquiries regarding this process for yoursef even if you just want to explore what Catholicism/Christianity is about . Hope this helps.
Peace.

An appropriate outfit for your son would be one that is white, or a nice white shirt and pants outfit. It is traditional for those being baptised to wear white no matter what the age of the person being baptised as it represents the purity of the spirit after it has been cleansed with the baptism.
The outfit worn by your son would be similar to how the little boys dressed for their first communion.
You may want to ask your RCIA instructor what they think about an outfit for your son if you still have concerns. That way you will know the norms for your particular church.

While I don't personally believe in toddler baptism, I am happy for you. My Pastor dedicates infants, but does not baptize them. Mom says it's basically the same thing. My cousin was baptized at his family's church two weeks ago. He's about 17 months, and was dressed in baby blue. Our whole family, Catholic and Protestant, was there to show our support.

First let me apologize for the those that have been less than christian with their respones. I had my daughter baptized into the anglican church at age 3 and we bought her a beautiful white dress but I've seen kids wear just about anything. I would suggest asking your priest for a suggestion.

You can simply call your local Parrish and ask what is customary for the area. My area has a heavy Latino influence and may differ from to area. To all those people giving you a hard time, I am sorry for the pain they are causing at this joyous time. And to them directly, the followers went into houses and were welcomed baptizing the ENTIRE household.

My grandchild, age 4, was baptized at Easter Vigil Mass this year as mommy completed RCIA, so I have this info first-hand from the RCIA instructors. Wearing white is encouraged, but it needn't be head-to-toe white. For a little boy, a white shirt is fine.
How wonderful for you both to be "coming home" to the Church! Welcome!

maximum no longer truly. The Catholic Church believes there is largely one baptism. It leaves an indelible mark on the soul. someone won't be able to be re-baptized. lots of the mainstream Protestant faiths have valid baptisms, and in case you belong to a minimum of one among them you does not could desire to be baptized. right it truly is a catalogue of a few faiths don't have valid baptism: Apostolic Church Bohemian unfastened Thinkers Christadelphians Christian community (Rudolf Steiner) Christian Scientists Church of Divine technological understanding Jehovah’s Witnesses Masons (no baptism in any respect) Mormons Church of the recent Jerusalem Pentecostal churches Peoples Church of Chicago Quakers Salvation military Unitarians @No probability and candy---incorrect! using fact the Catholic Church does not coach that baptism is in basic terms a profession of religion, we don't re-baptize people who enter our Church. Please do a splash diagnosis in the previous answering questions touching directly to the Catholic faith.

I think a nice pair of white shorts and a white top would be fine. Please try to raise your son with little more dignity and respect for other's beliefs than some of the people answering this question. I really don't understand why people are so threatened by what religion you decide to convert to or raise your son as.
Congratulations!

The priest/deacon won't refuse to baptize if he is not wearing white, but white really is the most appropriate color. Something like this would be perfect:

P.S. Don't listen to these nutjobs. I am a convert to Catholicism; it is a wonderful religion!
