    Best Man:

(Assists groom with all details of the wedding day.)

    Pays for own attire

    Transports groom to the church.

Supervises the groomsmen, regarding their dress and duties at ceremony

Takes care of bride's ring until ceremony.

    Presents the clergyperson with fee.

Signs and witnesses the marriage certificate

Offers the first toast to the bride and groom.

Dances with the bride after the groom and both fathers have danced with her

Returns groom's tuxedo to rental shop.

There are two more responsibilities on the list:

Prepares the honeymoon car, packs suitcases in car.

Holds for safe-keeping, any tickets, keys, etc. for the groom.

Warning: I am not sure I would let him do these two. Your car and luggage might end up completely decorated that way!

The best man is chosen based on who the groom trusts to take care of his family just in case something happens to him.

For the wedding the best man is usually tasked to arrange the bachelor's party, keep the rings safe and make a toast during the reception.

Besides all of the above most helpful suggestions, the best man is supposed to be just that. The best man. He's the organizer for the groom's activities [unless there's a wedding planner]. He is the representative for the groom while the groom is otherwise occupied being enamored of his bride.

This is a celebration... a party. The best man sees to it that the beverages flow smoothly, all the ladies have at least one dance [and if unable to find them a partner, offer himself], make the speech, and most importantly be there for the groom to lean on and confide in.

Well traditionally the task of a best man is to be courteous, well mannered, humor us and have a tendency to help others in distress without expecting any favor or reward. It is also important to mention that we must not forget that we are the best creation of God and therefore we should act accordingly.

According to Wikipedia "The role of best man was introduced by the Germanic Goths at approximately 200 AD. Due to a shortage of women, Goth men frequently resorted to bride kidnapping to procure wives. When the groom went to the bride's house with the intent of carrying her off, the best man was dispatched to help fight off the relatives of the bride." haha ... bizzare!
