In some countries/cultures, marriages between first cousins account for more than 50% of marriages. In some cultures it is preferred and seen as strengthening family ties and used to keep property within the family.

With any pregnancy there is a certain amount of risk of birth defects etc based on things like maternal age, lifestyle, etc and everyone actually carries defective genes that generally don't cause a problem when they have children. However, when you have two related people having children, the chances that they both carry the SAME defective gene is higher and when both parents have the same defective gene, the baby often will too. If there is already a history of birth defects within your family I would advise against your decision. As first cousins you have 1/8th your genes in common. Otherwise, you really don't have that much of an increased risk of problems. Unrelated people have a 3-4% risk of birth defects. Where parents are first cousins and there is no family history of genetic problems, or where there is no other history of parents being related in previous generations, the risk is approximately 5-6%. Looked at another way, there is approximately a 95% chance of having an unaffected baby.

Western societies have been educated to think that relationships between first cousins are wrong and always cause hideously mutated babies, but like I mentioned, it's far more common than those people realise, and generally doesn't cause defects.

Genetic counselling is designed for people just like yourself who are concerned they may have a baby with genetic problems.

As for the actual technique of impregnating yourself, I'm sure there are websites with advice on that. I believe the old turkey-baster method is somewhat preferred. Importantly, sperm can only live a very short time outside the human body (mere minutes), so speed is of the essence.

girl i wouldn't do that, u understand that it's Ur family and i think u heard that it's not good to have baby's from families.

u don't want Ur child to be born sick or with problems. Ur cousin has the same blood, so it's really not good.

Why can't u just wait and find some other person that will give u a sperm, just make sure u check him before u do it, u don't want him to be sick and etc.

I wouldn't look for sperm in the family tree - you are related - and it would be insest to begin with - and also - the baby would have a possibility of being deformed.

I would talk with your gyn again ... find a sperm bank - which is also ... dangerous in it's own way.

What about adoption? There are plenty of parents out there that can't take care of the babies they have - maybe venture out to that possibility.

Plus - just because you don't have anyone now - doesn't mean that you won't have anyone later.

This is a serious answer. Having a child with your cousin is a very bad idea. He is too close of a relative. You will open your baby to a host of genetic illnesses and disorders if you do this. Most children born to parents that are that closely related have a number of developmental defects as well....both physical and mental. Go to a sperm bank if you really want to do this.

you cannot use your own cousins sperm. the chance of genetic birth defects are high! that is almost like using sperm from a brother. you can use donor sperm and many women do. I am serious about this! your child will be born with serious birth defects if it lives. since you already seen a specialist the can artificially inseminate you with the donor sperm.

genetic defects run high in incest conceptions (sorry to word it that way but it's true).

the sperm banks now days are very selective on how they accept their donations so you won't run the risk of your child having a defect or being sick.

this could have serious bad side effects down the line-especially if the cousin suddenly decides that he wants to see his child-how are you going to explain that to your family let alone the child?

one thing you are facing some serious charges... if you become pregnant the baby will have missing chromosomes and can be retarded disfigured and god only knows what... also why not just go to a sperm bank? its safer and its not incest..
