what social class am i...yes, this is a rather pointless question?

okay, so this is an entirely useless question, but i shall ask it anyhow.

we are a single-income (predominantly...my mom works on & off) family. my father is a teacher, and has been with the same district for 21 years.

currently, we make around $60,000-$70,000. a few years back my mom actually had a dedicated job, in which their combined income was over $70,000.

of course, after that she lost her job and we bought a new house & car & then proceeded to add on to our house. which is why we're in debt. >.<

anyhow, someone once told me we're "working class" but that was a little insulting, considering my father has a graduate degree. but then we're not making $100,000 so i guess...we're not middle class? i kinda thought we were.

someone enlighten me. i was just talking with my friend about this, and i'm rather confused.

sorry this is not a very productive question. but i'm just. bored. >.<

thanks.!

Update:

i didn't mean to sound all snobby or overly-concerned. i'm very thankful & happy with my life as-is. just curious.

and also, in response to one of those answers, my friend's dad is a naval electrician (i hope i used the right spelling of naval) and makes a good bit more than my father.

Forget the non-sense of where you fit on a social scale as viewed by others and concentrate on where you fit on your own social scale. There have been times in my life when I barely had the basic necessities and there have been times when I had far more than my fair share, but there has never been a time when I felt poor. Be rich in your spirit and all else will fall into place.

i don't really understand the class system either, but, whatever the case, i am in the same position as you. my dad is the worker of the family, my mom (worker until recent work related injury) is now unable to work. my dad is also a teacher (high school) for 29 years provides the income. i just recently started "searching" for a job" i am only 17, so i am not too serious about it :P

anyway if whatever you find out let me know, as i am in the same situation.

we are middle class, which sucks for college, i'm too rich for finacial aid too poor to pay for college myself

Same with me. My mom's a teacher too. She makes about what your dad makes. I think we are considered middle class because we're definitely not rich but we also have enough money to buy more than the bear necesities.

Would it help to frame your question in terms of white/blue collar. Educated professionals vs. those in the trades--like plumbing, carpentry, electricians? Even though those workers might make more than your folks? Just a thought.

I'd say you're a middle class family. "Working class" strikes me as blue collar workers without a college degree, but I may be wrong.

i'd say you are middle class....but what does it really matter?...as long as you have warm place to live, the things you need to survive, and some things you want...and a loving family...that's what counts no matter what class anyone is
