What exactly did Salman Rushdie say or do that was so bad?

Why all the death threats? It can't surely be that bad can it?

Update:

All this fuss over a book? Some people are just stupid!

Just a silly book. And Yes, it's not like he killed 3000 unsuspecting innocent people. Right?

Well, he wrote the Satanic Verses back in the 80's which was deemed by Islam as blasphemy. The booked was banned and he went into hiding for several years because of death threats against him.

The hot water he finds himself in at the moment is because of the knighthood that the Queen bestowed on him. Not really his fault. I'm not sure that he practices Islam either so I don't see what the issue is.

Salman Rushdie wrote the Satanic Verses which was deemed by the Islamic religion to be blasphemous. That is what I heard. Haven't read it myself.

He wrote a book called "Satanic Verses" back in the '80s which stirred a lot of controversy with the Muslim community. And now that he was recently "knighted" and given the "Sir" title in England (which is the highest honor), some Muslims don't think Rushdie is worthy of that honor.

Poor guy -- his wife just recently left him, too, to boot. I wonder if it had anything to do with this mess.

Like 99.9% of people I haven't read his book, but I remember when it was published and when the Muslims first went bonkers over it, the news reports said that it was due to ONE SINGLE PASSAGE in the entire novel in which he said something about ONE of their prophet's wives (he had several wives) and he implied she was rather loose with her sexuality - careful cos you don't want the Muslims reading this and foaming at the mouth again!

Contrary to the belief of answerers here and contrary to the zillions of Muslims who know NOTHING about the book, it was JUST a fictional novel that apparently was not very well written, and DIDN'T slag off Islam or their prophet at all - like I say it was just ONE passage that said something mildly controversial about one of their prophet's wives, but as a result of years of insane 'Chinese Whispers' among non-Muslims too, this dumb book has been raised to some kind of massive demonic status.

It really is all too ridiculous and it'll be a lasting icon in history to demonstrate how utterly mental Muslims are for their insane over-reactions.

Slagged off Allah and the Islam religion. I think it was a bad move for him to get a knighthood as it will kick off here because of that. Our country have no savvy and poor innocent people will suffer because of it. The mad 2nd in command mullah, whoever he is, has said there are threats to the UK because of this.

He wrote a novel and the character was anti-Islam.

It didn't actually quote Salmon Rushdie as saying anything. I never read it - it was too boring.

He wrote an incredibly boring book, full of the blandest possible prose. That was a horrendous novel to wade through, believe me.

He wrote a book called the Satanic verses - a rather odd sort of Sci-Fi / fantasy, and one of the characters was the prophet Mohamed - not portrayed very charitably.

That's it. He wrote a book. Evil, eh?
