The name earwig comes from Old English eare "ear" and wicga "insect". It is fancifully related to the notion that earwigs burrow into the brains of humans through the ear and therein lay their eggs.[2] This belief, however, is completely false, as it would be impossible for an insect to eat through the human skull in its lifetime.

When you are sleeping the body's natural response would be to slap it off before it gets in the ear. That action would awake you for sure, at which time it could be pulled out with a pair of tweezers, if it actually managed to get in. I don't think it would be laying eggs then, much less having them hatch. Sleep tight. The possibility is practically nil.

All of you answering this question have obviously NOT had an earwig in your ear! I have, they DO go into people's ears and cause alot of pain and infection! You're giving BAD advice, what a bunch of ignorant people in the world today!

No, they are perfectly harmless to humans.

There are various theories as to how they got their name, one says that they were named so because they were once used to be dried, ground up and taken as a medicine against ear infections.

This explanation is probably as good as all the others.
