There are a couple of avenues. First is to check with your local university departmente of archaeology and see if any digs are planned and if they let non-professional people take part. If they don't, check with your travel agent. There are several tour companies who arrange just that sort of trip. It isn't cheap, and the conditions aren't posh, but it certainly can be exciting.

I thought I saw something a while back about an archelogical dig. Or search for internships on monster.com. You don't have to be a student to do an internship. You could also inquire at field and history museums to see if they have anything going on or about to go that you can volunteer to do. I hope this helps. Good luck!
