Why don't people ever look up things in the dictionary?

pa·gan

–noun 1. one of a people or community observing a polytheistic religion, as the ancient Romans and Greeks.

2. a person who is not a Christian, Jew, or Muslim.

3. an irreligious or hedonistic person.

–adjective

4. pertaining to the worship or worshipers of any religion that is neither Christian, Jewish, nor Muslim.

5. of, pertaining to, or characteristic of pagans.

6. irreligious or hedonistic.

notice it says nothing about Satan, the Devil, witch craft, or any of the hundreds of other things associated with paganism. It just says polytheistic beliefs, non Abrahamic beliefs, or hedonist (pleasure seeking, not necessarily evil)

So please before people just start throwing labels around like its going out of style please look them up.

Out of respect you should also pick up a Bible and read it as much as you do the dictionary.

Pagans reject the Judaeo-Christian God of the Bible for alternative gods and goddesses.

The Ten Commandments are also found in Deuteronomy 5.

And God spake all these words, saying, I am the LORD thy God, which have brought thee out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of bondage.

    .

    First of The Ten Commandments:

Thou shalt have no other gods before me.

Therefore, anything that goes against God's Commandments or God's Word is not of God and is considered from Satan and evil.

If you REALLY want to know what a word means/implies, get an etymological dictionary. The history of language resumes the history of human thought.

"Pagan" comes from a word that originally meant "rural" or "civilian," as opposed to the "soldier of Christ" in the militarized conception of early Christianity. In other words, it's an artifact of the earliest campaigns on the part of Christians against competing religions. It really IS a derogatory term, in spite of the fact that it's been rehabilitated by modern "pagans."

I know what you mean. I'm an ex-wiccan turned Christian and what really bugs me is when christians call pagans/wiccans cults. It doesn't do any good to explain that they are far from cults considering most of them choose to be solitary and don't push their beliefs on others. It's that self righteouss know it all attitude that refuses to look up things in the dictionary.

Look at the question below yours - now that's irony

To answer, it doesn't matter what you or the dictionary says to believers - if you don't believe in their god you worship the devil.

They tell me i worship the devil and I don't even believe in the dude

Hey, let's not go crazy there. Gotta go baby steps with some people. Though, eventually, I expect "JFGI" to get tossed around more.

Ever wonder what do you expect them to do ?

When they were living in misery with communication problems.

With some don't even know how to read.

Ever wonder why do we have to kick them on their butts when they were living in misery out there?

Why not reach out and extend them a helping hands in solving their misery with "He's ain't heavy he's my brother" in near or faraway land in the creation of peace on earth goodwill to men on planet earth?

Jake...agree with what you said about having people do the research.....

However, I do not have the info of why you are giving this definition...

As a Christian, a "pagan" is following a self absorbed pleasure seeking way of life...as do Atheists (lol) and, drug addicts and alcoholics do the same, as do pedophiles seeking their own pleasure do, and those whom follow the Occult are also seeking their own pleasures...

Christians seek pleasure, but we have to make a lot of the sacrifices that the others think of as "pleasure" to do so. :)

    So, what are you saying?

    May you find Peace :)

Re-read your number 4. It is within the bounds of the dictionary to refer to the worship of Satan as "paganism."

    Blessings.

the dictionary is wrong, it is only right as long as people r still using it that way. Pagan had proboly obtained a new meaning by now by your story. Same goes with gay.
